Default 2JZGTE VVTi Timing Belt Installation, Help needed!

Can anyone help me with the timing belt installation on a VVTi 2JZGTE (Ex JZS161).

It isn't the same as a non-vvti timing belt setup

My first problem is that when I set the crank to 0, neither of the cam marks line up... so it might be incorrect already...yay

Both cam gears and the crank pulley drive gear have two markings on them, a 'slot' and a 'dot'. Crank pulley also has two markings too... I believe that the 'slots' are the timing markers however...not sure what the dots are for...

Secondly once I remove the timing belt, I can move the inlet (VVTi) cam gear (Without moving the cam itself) a very significant amount, see pictures below...

So if I was to set the cam pulleys to have the slot mark pointing straight up, then I have the option of having the inlet pulley setup a few ways...(I can move the inlet cam to achieve these...)
    • So that the cam gear has no clockwise play, and lots of anti-clockwise play
    • So that the cam gear has no anit-clockwise play, and lots of clockwise play
    • Somewhere in between the first two options

I suspect it will be something like, turn cam via cam gear so that there is no clockwise paly and insure timing marks line up... but currently I don't know!

    Can anyone help! Thanks!

Crank timing belt gear, see dot 4 teeth to right (on end)

    Full Anit-clockwise

    Full Clockwise

I Just did mine on my 1J VVTi, i ended up getting instructions off clublexus so maybe you can have a look around there, sorry but for the life of me can't find the document again or remember for sure which way they go.

I think it was option one you mentioned but can't remember for sure.

willbo, pick up your accessory drive pulley, and compare the crankshaft position in relation to the timing marks on the cover. You will then know for sure whether the dot or the keyway is the timing point. Set the inlet and exhaust cams to both line up with their rspective markings on the rear plate. Compress the tensioner amd insert an allen key of appropriate size. Fit belt and tensioner, and remove allen key. Job done.

The reason you are getting the movement in the cam gear in relation to the cam, is total lack of oil pressure.

    cheers Chuck.

Yah, as said if you just ignore the fact that the VVTi gear can move and do it in a normal fashion it will be correct.

I think the newer replacement belt will also have marks on it that line up with the marks on the gears too

    I still wouldn't mind finding a guide for a 2jzge VVTi from GS300, or late JZA80

Thanks cambelt! <--- rep this man!

I think I've worked it out (Thanks to the pictures from the GS300 manual he sent me!)

The 2JZ-GE (Non-turbo) is an interference engine. (reference)

I believe that the 2JZ-GTE is a Non-interference engine... (Draven's broken timing belt incident would suggest this strongly )

The manual describes how to install the cam gears, here is a brief version for the exhaust cam
    • Align crank pulley 'dot' with mark on oil pump (5 teeth to the right from 'slot', so before TDC)
    • Align cam gear 'dot' so it is vertical and in line with mark on backing plate (5 teeth to the right from 'slot', so before TDC)
    • Hold cam gear with SST and tighten bolt

I suspect the reason for this is due to the interference nature of the engine! Assembling the cam gear backed off from TDC with the crank also backed off from TDC adds a lot of leeway in regards to ensuring that the assembler doesn't accidentaly put a valve into a piston as I see it.

It then tells you to set the timing belt with the 'dots' lined up all around, then rotate the crank 2 revolutions and check the 'slots' line up!

Following the same procedure as the 2jzge on a gte isn't going to cause issues, but it might confuse those with lower cranial capacity such as myself !

    Edit:
JZA80 VVTi 2JZGE timing belt replacement procedure if anyone is interested.

You did but then you didn't go on to tell me the usage of the dots on the cam gears did ya?.... Nope

I was putting all the info in one post as it related to my thoughts on the usage of the dots
