    Didn't work for me.

And that circuit shown didn't work with any old transistor I pulled out of my junk box either (must of had shite gain)....

    Bah.

Maybe a tacho's coolness is inversely related to its age?

i built one of those booster but it doesnt work too good

i think for memory the guy at disk smith (and he looked like dick smith too ) gave me slight variations in the compents shown in that diagram

for some reason it worked fine on the 4cyl tacho but didnt want to work on the 6cyl tacho.

on the 6cyl tacho, the needle is a bit impotent ....it takes a while to get up. basically it doesnt work to 100% until 4 grand. its a bit floppy below that area. it kind of hovers around all over the place

anyway, i think the moral of the storyis; buy exact components?

frequency response? 'any coil will do' for the inductor coil might be the prob?
someone with elec exp should know.

    cool1 has ...
3S-GTE + mines ecu if I recall (plug in replacement for the stock ecu) in a TA22.

Maybe i haven't looked long enough, but is there a reason why ur using the coil out of a relay? I'm assuming it is more to do with the internal resistance giving a nice current limit with 12 volts across it as opposed to any advantage(?) of it's inductance.

Without testing it i would've guessed at a circuit with the input running through a 2k(ish) ohm resistor into the base of a common NPN BJT (BC337,546 etc) and a small (2k-ish ohm) resistor from 12v down to the collector and the emitter to ground. Take the output from the collector.

why use the coil instead of a resistor???
