    Default W58 stuff

    Hey,
I just recently put a W58 into my soarer and ever since then somewhere in the driveline has some backlash. I would be pretty sure its the GB as i never had any problems with the diff woth the auto.

What is happening in any gear if you shift a little badly, or jump on the gas too quickly, or jump off the gas to quickly(especially at slow speeds) then there is abit of a jolt and a cluncking noise. Get me? What would cause this any idea's.

Another problem is there is quite a bit of feedback through the shifter, I think i am missing some bushes somewhere. I have heard about the green and white bushes??? but since never working on a w58 or manual for that matter before i dont know if there is something missing.

    Ideas would be great.
    Thanks.

Also gear oil viscosity , if its a tired w58 use 80/90 gear oil instead of the lighter stuff .

Backlash is something you don't notice much with an auto. The problem was always there, you're just noticing it now that you have a manual. As above, the problem is with your diff, not the gearbox.

Aww diff . So would this be a case of the pinion and ring gears being fubared. So when a force is applied in the opposite direction, it moves and then slaps onto another face?

Can you get new pinion and ring sets? I've been really liking these 4.55's on the manual and would have no idea where to find a replacement as they are a jap only ratio, am i correct?

    Thanks for your input guys.

Oh i guess i should be unbolting my tailshaft and seeing if there is any freeplay in the pinion to diagnose the problem.

nope, just handbrake on, gearbox in nuetral and move tailshaft by hand

backlash can be adjusted. crunchy noises can't

if it is backlash, you can either reset it yourself or pay someone lots to do it (or less if you take it out of the car...)

It's basically setting the correct clearances between the gears. It's really not something you'd be able to do very well if you're not fairly knowledgeable on the subject. It's not too hard to drop the diff out and pay a specialist a couple of hundred to fix though.

i agree with Norbie, whilst not hard to do, if you are putting decent power thru it, it'S nice to get someone who knows what they are doing to set it... and check the condition of bearings etc at the same time

if your unis are that loose... i hope you have a tailshaft loop!!
diff backlash will last for a while..... bitsed uni joints are farkin dangerous!!!
no more lazy boy for you (unless you want to set new "car pole-vaulting" records )

well the front uni is brand new as i just got the fron half lengthened for the convo. I'll have a play around the box to see if i can find something obvious. I spoke to a freind today, they also said check the rear diff mount. Would this apply.

ALso does anyone know where that W58 FAQ is, i cant find it through searchs on old and new toymods.

Thanks again for all your help guys
