Question RE: E58 LSD's - Definitive way to determine if LSD or not?

    Hey guys,
I had a search through the forums and all already - but I'm going to look at a E58 + LSD and was wondering if there is a DEFINITIVE way to know if it is LSD or not?

Also, the shafts aren't attached to the box if that helps.

Oh and is there a way to test whether the LSD is munched without installing it into a car?

    Cheers

You can tell a LSD by jacking up the car and turning the wheels by hand.
If you turn the wheel forward and the opposite wheel turns forward as well its a LSD.

If you turn the wheel forward and the opposite wheel turns the other way ( backward ) then it is open wheel.

some older LSDs will be too 'loose' to behave like this. so you could argue that the only definitive way to identify a LSD is to look at the centre itself.

and this method also wont tell you if it is a mechanical LSD.

If the car is jacked up and there is no load on the wheels even a stuffed LSD should have enough tension to spin both wheels as it is the crown wheel driving the basket / axles

+ a open wheeler always turns the other way so you can decipher between the two.

Just pull the speedo drive out and have a look inside. You can see the diff easily through the hole.

Sounds like the diff isn't in the car?

With the smaller C series boxes, you can actually see daylight through the diff centre for an open centre assembly, but not with an LSD unit - I'm not sure if this is the same for E series boxes, and all mine are packed away in a shed, so not easily acessable. I too think the original question relates to an assembly out of the car, so you can actually feel the spline housing for the driveshafts, while you have a second person turn the input shaft of the box - make sure the box is "in gear" for this test, to determine "axle rotations.

Yeah guys, sorry if I wasn't clear, the gearbox is OUTSIDE of the car - I was hoping someone on here has SOME experience with the Factory Option E58 LSD's (Viscous if I'm not mistaken) but it seems that their rarity means... well... lol

As far as i know there is no crosspin in lsd diffs, ie with no driveshafts in you have an unobstructed view right through the centre of the diff. A non lsd diff needs sun and planet wheels, hence the crosspin.

No i haven't, I haven't seen the gearbox as of yet - would this be... difficult to do? (I don't personally know much about gearboxes )

It will have a cros bar through the guts if it's a stock LSD. My E153 has a viscous LSD and will act like an open centre when simply turning one wheel with the car jacked up but once there is a decent torque load it will spin up both wheels properly.

So there should be no light visible if i look through the box where the shafts go?

If it is a stock open centre there will be a round hole through the middle of the diff, if it is a stock LSD then there will be a bar across the middle of the diff centre.

I dont want to disagree with anyone here, but i have 3 Honda, 1 Escort, 3 Toyota fwd transmissions kicking around my workshop and they all have crosspins except one which is a JDM Starlet turbo lsd box. With no driveshafts in you can clearly see right through the diff.
