    just bumping this thread,

put a tacho into my crown (pins were +VE, 1, -VE).. connecting signal from Alternator and coil, onto +VE and -VE pins (didnt use 1, as i didnt know what it was for).
the tacho worked a treat, had correct idle etc, revved freely etc etc .... then 2 days later after starting car and on the first rev it cut out and died.

is this a case of needing a tacho booster? ... or did i fry something in the tacho (VH commo 6cyl tacho)

i built a external one recently and it worked a treat! quite simple really also it shouldn't click cause all your using out of the relay is the coil so u can use a smaller relay, pcb relay (more compact i guess) from jaycar and just use each of the pins from each side of the coil

Hey guys, I joined this forum to ask about this despite not having a toyota (although I'm enjoying the cars for sale section immensely ) and need a little help. I wired up all this stuff for my nissan S12 gazelle that runs an SR20DE+T off a microtech but it doesn't work. I tested the voltage of the signal wire and it was around 3 volts I think (I can't remember exactly) and then once I used the pull up resistor it changed it to 12v. However the tacho still doesn't work.

Previously I had tried running a wire to diode off each of the wires coming out of the ignitor then joining the wires to one after the diodes, however upon closer inspection the microtech does not seem to use the stock ignitor at all so this was a waste of time. Could I run this setup with the wires coming off the coilpack signal wires or earth wires then through a diode or could this send too much voltage to the tacho? Any help would be great. I'm very new to auto electrics but keen to learn. Thanks.

Put a Autometer Tacho in a Datto 1200 running an early AE92 4AGZE. It happily ran from the 5V IGN signal directly from the ECU.

    hey blacky
this relay setup works on mostly toyotas
on nissans I use a different type of booster
    I get from china
these work when u wire a late rb into a dr30
skyline so I presume your tacho would work
    a similar way

Yeah I was trying to steer clear of an aftermarket tacho if I could avoid it broken22. Do you have a link to the chinese booster you used in the DR30 dumbass? Cheers.

If anyone in Brisbane needs one of these free I have one spare as it didn't work on my car (the signal was 12v but the tacho didn't respond).

I have no idea how to get my stock S12 tacho working so I will be investigating changing the mechanism for an S13 one if I can fit it ok, or possibly just use an aftermarket one.

Yeah, that's the plan once I get the cash and the other things I need to fix sorted. I don't have a booster anymore, I hope it worked .

    Hey guys.
I've made a few of these that work on all the cars I've done so far.

But I have a friend with a Nissan Exa Turbo e15et engine.
We have fitted msd to it, but now the rpm doesn't work.
I fitted one of these to his car but still doesn't work.
I have tested the tach booster on another car and it does work.

On the original coil negative his car pulses 12 - 13v to the cluster rpm guage and it works.
With the tach booster I get about 9v going to the cluster rpm guage.
It seems that it is too low for the cluster to work.
How would I go about increasing the 9v to around 12v ?

i have afew different types of tacho boosters
    one mainly does toyotas
    the other mainly does nissans
so this relay trick doesnt work on most nissans
