Just an FYI for those who want to build themselves a tach booster and dont know where to get the parts.

Visit your local Jaycar Electronics store and purchase the following:

    • ZT2115 - BC337 transistor - $0.42
    • ZR1007 - 1N4007 diodes, pack of 4 - $0.60
    • RR0582 - 2k7 resistors, pack 8, $0.46
    • SY4068 - SPST 4-pin relay, $7.95
    • PT4525 - red female spade crimp terminals, pk 8, $2.75
    • WH5532 - 3.0mm black heatshrink, $1.85
    • WH5533 - 5.0mm black heatshrink, $1.95
    • WH5554 - 6.0mm clear heatshrink, $2.25

Now im too lazy to bother opening up a relay and doing some finicky soldering to the guts of it..... so i did an external version

    METHOD:

    1. Start by soldering the 2k7 resistor and 1N4007 diode together. Pay attention to the diode - the grey band should point towards the resistor
    2. Now solder the other end of the resistor to the base (B) leg of the BC337 transistor. Note the pinouts of the BC337 below

    3. Solder wires to the other two legs of the transistor. "E" of the transistor goes to earth, "C" of the transistor goes to the tacho output and also the relay coil.

    4. Attach spade terminals as follows, and connect to your relay.

Nice, i didnt think about doing an exterrnal version.

Out of interest, does the relay click and carry on when running Witzl? Or are the pulses too short to actually move the contacts?

    Hen

EDIT - Just realised that you could well have not connected it to a running car yet. In any case I'd be interested to hear once it's running.
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

Hen - i've built one before and i dont remember it clicking at all.
Will check again when i install this one.

just remove the bit of the relay that clicks - just requires needle-nose pliers and a minor amount of unreasonable force.

in reality i dont think the pulse would be anywhere near long enough to active the relay

You are a legend Mr Witzl, i have seen the diagrams on here before and never been able to actually work out how it should look. Maybe i am simple, (electronics wise) but that series of pictures on how to build one is the best i've seen, I think I will be able to do it now, thank you sir.

Just a side note, regarding the question of the relay clicking..... It only clicks once or twice whilst the engine is cranking, but once the engine is running the pulses are too fast for the relay's mechanical parts to move enough to audibly click.
Even if it did click and eventually die, it has no effect on the operation of the tacho booster whatsoever.

Can any one make me one of these? I'd quite happily pay someone to do so as I simply don't have the skills.

I just want to add to this thread for the next person that reads it.

The wire your looking for running to the dash if you have an MA61/MZ11/MZ10 etc.

Is located in the DRIVERS SIDE kick panel.

Its a black wire with no dots/lines. Very skinny and plugged into the drivers kick panel fuse box next to a WHITE with BLACK STRIPE wire.

IF you connect the "out -> to tacho" wire from your booster , to this black wire. your digital dash will work.

Rep added to a bunch of you.
    I tried "Karl's version".
The transistor is very fragile so I bundled the wires together to the relay packing. As I don't know a thing about electronics, will packing these componenets so close together affect anything?
Oh I see how the clear heatshrink is holding the three wires from the transistor together. I'll have to amend that.

being so close together wont affect the operation at all.
What you have done, so long as it is wired correctly, will work perfectly. I probably wouldve used fully insulated terminals on the relay though, to avoid potentially shorting out the exposed terminals on the car chassis.

im in the process of fucking around with my tacho..., grafting in some cheapo ebay tach mechanism that does 11k, and has a switchable 4/6/8cyl signal thingo on it

now im running an autronic sm4, and ive never looked at what kind of output it has.

i do know that the cheapo tach ive got wants a signal off the -ve from a coil, so im guessing thats the kind of signal this little circuit thing produces?

so the thing is i guess, does the autronic sm4 tach output have the right kind of signal for an input to this circuit?

    cheers
    ed

edit - and before anyone whinges about the quality of my tach, yes its shit, but its just a guide i only really need the shiftlight

uh, the other thing i was going to say, is there any merit to the idea of just hooking the autronic up to the tach, but chopping/jumping the first resistor on the tach circuit board (82k) on the tach signal input?

im a COMPLETE schmultz with electronics. treat me like a child....
