    Default M series bellhousing/transmission interchangeability

I am looking at doing a manual conversion in my MX32 (4M). I know a W50 tranny/bellhousing from a MA46 should fit no problem, but how about a transmission or bellhousing from a MA61? A W55/58 would be much better IMO, not to meantion easier to source out.

    Thanks in advance,

    Josh

W40/W50 bellhousings will not fit on the later W5x alloy boxes, so what you want is a box and bellhousing from a later-model car with an M series engine (eg MA61, MZ10 etc). You will probably need to modify the gearbox crossmember as well, I know this is the case when upgrading an RA23 Celica from W50 to W58, but the tailshaft should fit with no mods.

Short answer MA61 will fit (bolt to the engine) if you get the bellhosuing and gearbox from the MA61. MA70 (non turbo) will also fit.

As said W40/W50 will not bolt up with the MA61/MA70 bellhousing.

As for gearbox xmember I am unsure. MX62 gearbox xmember is the same width as MX32 (I used a MX32 auto xmember for an auto -> manual conversion once) so that might be an option...or may not

Thanks for the info guys, thats very good news!
One more question though: if I bolt on a W58 and bellhousing, will I still be able to use a W50 flywheel and starter motor? Or would a 5M flywheel bolt on to a 4M?

    Thanks again,

    Josh

Flywheel and starter will be fine.

    Clutch also = fine

W40/W50 and W5x share the same input spline.

The spline is the same, but the clutch diameter is bigger on the W5x (224mm vrs 236mm). Thus my question about the flywheels, as one would want the corresponding flywheel for the clutch used.

Yes, I've posted pictures comparing 5me vs 7mge flywheels in the past

Yes you will need to use the clutch hardware that suits the flywheel you have, as you have stated.

If you use the clutch & pressure plate that suits the M series flywheel you have it will work with either a W40/W50 or a W5x

Treat the clutch assembly as the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel and there shouldn't be issues

So.... does that mean I CAN bolt a 5M-GE flywheel to the 4M? I have to source out a flywheel as well (obviously) and it would also be better/easier to get my hands on one of those.

Once again, thanks for all the info guys! This is going to save me a lot of time measuring, trying, and messing up!

Sorry, but slightly off topic here.

Whats the PCD of the engine to bellhousing bolts?
Just need to grab some for the engine stand.

Sorry, best existing topic i could find

It still isn't called "Thread PCD" or "Thread Pitch Circle Diameter"

Thread pitch and diameter, or perhaps thread designation might be more accurate
