Default Input on Slide throttle idea please!

    Hey everyone!

I was just talking to a friend and he was talking about the slide throttles found on F1's these days. I then thought, why not design one that could be used on a road car?

Here is my initial design with simple circular 40mm holes.

The design eliminates the use of butterflies which impede air flow, and are relatively delicate.
This design uses ball bearing tracks to guide the plate back and forth and theoretically achieves zero air impediment when fully open and is 100% air tight when fully closed. The front plate can be modified to fit trumpets, air filters, etc.

My question is, could there be any downsides to using this on the road? I am sure that it would be advantageous on the race track, but is there anything to be gained on the road over a conventional butterfly throttle? I am thinking the gains will be marginal to negligible...
Please point out any errors in my thinking or design if possible as well!

    Cheers!

    Chris

to me, it seems a great idea, the main problem i can see on a road car is the cost of production and even tho a great idea, may be a little overkill for a road car in my opinion. As you said there would be marginal, if any gains, and not a very bang for buck mod.

F1's don't use slide throttle, haven't for years. They either use conventional butterfly-type or barrel throttles.
Butterfly-types aren't as cool but they can breath just as well as all you have to do is make them a tiny bit bigger and they flow as well as any slide throttle. They also seal better and most impotantly never jam.
A slide throttle that big is always going to jam, and they never jam with the throttle closed.

But anyway, the design is good, I'd just add some rollers to make sure the slide moves smoothly and doesn't jam (much!), then figure out how to make it seal ...

Wow, I am behind the times!

I was just thinking about lubrication and how to make the holes seal. My first thought was a little gasket of some sort, but this will collect lubricant and feed it into the intake when ever it opens and closes.

Wasn't aware of the jamming problems. Sounds a little scary...

Teflon slides mate. If you're clever you can also make them the seals.

Mazda used to make a set for the factory rotaries, you might be able to dig up a set in Aus somwhere to look at them.

Mmmm, I am thinking the same.

It would be a good solution if you had a really little engine bay and not much space though...

    Something like this ->

    - is a much better thing, and with suitable cleverness be able to be made at home with a milling maching and lathe.
It's two bars of alloy, with large slot milled into them and they rotate in opposite directions and are linked by a small set of gears at one end.

That is a really cool idea. How compact is that unit!

    $2750. Wow, what a price!

I might look into this! I'll have a play on CAD and see what happens.

We made one of these roller ones for our FSAE car, they are good in that they offer a nice path at wot but a lot of thought has to be put into a tricky throttle such as this, it needs gears between the rollers that can be prone to getting crap in them and jamming. It is also hard to get to idle as the rollers need ot be close together to seal properly and you will need a good idle circuit designed in. We have gone back to a conventional butterfly with no noticable loss. I'll get a couple of pics.

slide throttle mechanism contamination and subs friction makes it useless on a road car that wont get pulled apart every few hundred kms

barrel wins over slide! it is less likely to jam.
