It is a potentially good looking option, you would need to get the rack location right though. Could be difficult to fit between the crossmember and bellhousing and looks like it would need to mount off the chassis rails.

Can certainly be done. A tape measure will generally tell you though the drag link has limited space between the crossmember and the bellhousing which that sort of rack will fill pretty quickly. Push the motor back for more clearance and you run into firewall issued etc plus the front bowl sump will likely need clearancing for the crossmember.

ill be doing this conversion in the coming months. will update with pics. i believe it'll be really simple to do. also youd wanna set your motor where u want and work the rest from there. mind u it'll be in a crown not a ta22.
The drag link moves fore and aft and up and down. To accommodate that amount of movement , their has to be a fair bit of room. Engineers will require 10mm clearance, I usually give them 12mm just to be safe. greenmac80, if it all turns pearshaped on the Crown, the MS85 recirculating ball steering box is available with power, and it fits nicely into an MS55.

mine is an ms85. has power box. even with everything replaced its terrible. my toyota owners manual says 30mm freeplay is normal. i dont fancy chasing the wheel once the 1uz is in.
hey guys, I was driving my ta22 on the weekend and dropped into the local supercheap for some car cleaning products, anyways i just so happen to park next to a 1st gen Mazda MX5... and i got thinking about the similarities in the chassis platform. Front mount rear drive, small 4 cylinder engine etc etc... then i got thinking about how the mx5 and ta22 are both very small cars, the mx5 cant be much wider if at all than a ta22...
Has anyone considered measuring up a steering rack from an MX5 to gauge if it will be a good donor for a ta22 R+P conversion?
Here's a pic of when I was roughly fitting the Daewoo Lanos / Holden Camira rack a few years back. It was rotated to allow for better line up of the steering joint. From memory there was going to be some very sharp angles on the coupling uni joints if you mounted the rack flat
Daewoo rack on top and camira rack on bottom. Daewoo rack is about 50mm wider due to longer end caps. the daewoo rack also had a strut type dampener on it

Hi all i recently brought a ae71 donor car for a rack and pinion conversion on my ta22 i have complete steering and suspension including coilovers with ae86 brakes. I don't want to go the route of shortening the rack or crossmember as custom engine mounts need to be made anyway how do i go about this conversation.Wider track doesn't bother me as the rear track will be wider than stock as well I'm planing on using flairs. I know that the answers are in here somewhere but this conversation has been done a bit now and surly there is an easier way any help would be appreciated PM me if you like cheerz Andrew
Plz some help would be really appreciated
I used an unshortened KE70 rack on a TA22 crossmember. Naturally it sits higher than it would on a AE71 xmember, so it has better bumpsteer characteristics than a shortened rack (T3 LCAs - 330mm, T3 90mm steering arms, 50mm RCAs, XT130 struts). I had a shortened rack and took it out in favour to put a standard one in.
Great stuff i got the ae71 crossmember trying to see how it would work today not going to happen i dont thing so am thinking of that path and putting the rack on my original crossmember witch will work out well coz engine mounts are already made for my ca18det to bolt up have you got any pics of how you put the rack on and did you end up with a wider track
sorry for bringing up an old thread but couldnt find any definite answers;
i found this link that lists a whole bunch of track widths for various cars.

Has anyone looked into whether a ford escort Mk1 rack will fit? front track is quoted as 1284mm
I looked at using Mk1 Escort rack since quick racks are readily available from UK. Only problem is they mount front of crossmember hence rotate wrong direction. Unless someone wishes to modify crossmember and sump on front dished engines then make/buy steering arms.
I forgot to say. Thanks for putting info up.

Couldn't just swap steering arms side to side and flip to be front facing?
