    wierd but true ... in Thailand Diesel is much more cheaper than normal unleaded. Many people use diesel car due to cheaper price of filling the tank.

    And these diesel engine pulls max power in very low rpm as well. In drag a soluna with 1KD was in 3rd gear while a B16C civic still in 2nd gear.

    I was able to find the VKC sport version picture (car picture), still looking for the engine bay picture.

    Nothing weird there... most places diesel is cheaper, it's just that Australia seems to have a funny way of pricing fuel that makes diesel 10c/litre more OR less expensive than petrol, depending on the angle of the moon on the fish pond of Mr. Price Himself.

    Have you driven any of the new 1KD Hiluxes?

    I've driven nearly all the variants now as I as work in mining and these things are everywhere now, they're extremely popular. The tall diff ratio makes them nice to drive, meaning not so many gear changes needed any more because of the huge torque down low.
    Even the 4x4 auto's go like a shower of shit compared to the older turbo 1KZ hilux utes.
    I just bought another 1KZ powered auto Surf(my 4th Hilux overall) myself and that goes pretty well but these new engines are chalk and cheese in dfference, power wise, plus the fuel ecomony is awesome too.

    Having ridden in the back of one of these (set up as a sawgthaew) from Mae Sot to Um Phang in Thailand (very steep, very windy road) with a suicidal driver, I can definitely say they have PLENTY of torque! Thanks for the specs prog!

    Probably should have elaborated on that...

    Sawng = 2

    Thaew = rows.

    It's the next best thing to a local bus in thailand. A ute or a light truck set up with two rows of bench seats in the back. Much fun to be had!

    I've driven enough new hilux's to know what i'm on about, they're alot better than the early 1kz but compared to the last of the intercooled 1kz they're only marginaley better.
    I just think the hype about the common rail system providing more power is crap(It's possible but toyota ain't using it to it's full extent), the fuel consumption is great though. i think most of the 1kd's presumed torque is just due to the vatn turbo.

    though i must admit i only just drove a 1kd-ftv 4x2 cab style-side today and it wasn't too shaby due to the lack of weight

    Common-rail technology is old.. it's just recently they've discovered how to optimize it with modern know-how so it saves a lot more fuel while being efficient... in terms of power and torque.. well.. u're using less while producing pretty much the same power and torque if not slightly more.. i'd say CRD is good stuff... plus my mom has the peugeot that goes over 1000 kms on one tank of diesel.. (33 cents per litre where i'm from FTW!!).. we fill up 10 times or less before every service.. for a car that can average 180 km/h (again we don't have speed limits and big highways) nuff said

    Sorry to dig up an old thread, but has anyone tried swapping one of these in to something else? How did they go? Was it worth it? Any pitfalls? Where do you find one of these engines anyway?

    Cheers,

    DAMN! Do you have any pics of this thing? 645NM of torque would be mad for a street car.
