Default 2JZ Timing belt tensioner probs etc.

I removed my harmonic balancer, timing belt pulley and CAS trigger disc. I thought that the CAS trigger disc might be loose and causing my error code 12 which is STILL bugging me. Apparently this "star" comes loose and causes CAS error codes. I will tack it on with the mig so it cant fall off. I changed the front crank seal too.

I discovered another prob damn it! I think the timing belt tensioner may be rooted. You can see the rod that sticks out. This rod should move in and out by spring pressure shouldn't it? seems to be stuck solid. I can turn it but it won't go in or out. Is this rooted? How much does a new one cost? Has anyone got one they can sell me?

Also what is the disc with the holes in it? Is it just for locating the timing belt?

If its anything like my tensioner on my 20 (it looks very similar) it is hydrolic.

Could not move it by hand, the manual said to use a 1 tonne press to close it and put a pin through the holes before putting it back in. I did not have a 1 tonne press so I used a bottle jack, spare car, brick wall.. took a few goes but got it compressed again..

it will be REALLY REALLY hard to push in.
you need a bench vice or similar to close it, then I used an allan key to keep it closed until I was ready to tension it up again.

that is a weird CAS star...
new tensioner from toyota... about ~$100 from memory
and yes, that circle is just to locate the timing belt (although I'm dubious as to how much good it does)

Use vice to push it in. Make sure you line up the holes in the shaft and body and put a 1.5mm drill bit (or similar - nail etc) thru both holes to keep the shaft in the body. Fit everything up and then pull out the pin.

Cheers. So what is the correct procedure to do it back up?

    (edit.. vice job. Cheers)

Last time I could force it up there and get the bolts to start (was a prick to get them started) but as I tightened them up the belt tightened nicely.

Why does that star look funny? Maybe its just the way the pic is taken as the disc is on the bottom. There is nothing wrong with it so I will not replace it. I will just tack it to make sure the disc can never come loose.
