Hi, I just purchased a 1974 Toyota Crown with the 2.6 4m engine. Went to pick it up and when I was driving home I noticed the the car would hesitate under any acceleration and would struggle to climb hills. Plugs checked out fine, leads, has a new fuel+air filter and dizzy checked out ok. I'm thinking it might be the carb. Any ideas?
Also after driving it 360km back home I noticed as I reached my driveway the the auto transmission was making a loud whining noise which would increase in pitch right before it would change to 2nd gear. Transmission fluid was at the correct level and looked very clean pinkish/red (what is the correct type of trans fluid for these cars) ?. Any ideas and input would be great.

For your consideration, the 4M engine has somewhere between 81-90KW @ 5600RPM brand new (in case you did not know). The Crown masses ~1.4 tonnes. This may be that simply power to weight ratio is a factor.
Otherwise, perhaps check the timing?
First gear of an older Crown automatic transmission can emit a whine. As far as I know, this is normal.

I think you better check the auto oil asap. The car must be idling in park to get a proper reading.
Sounds like carby to me - throttle pump most likely.
Pull the carby off, diassemble and rebuild with a kit. You should be good to go.
Carby most likely just needs a kit and a good clean.
(Get the carby sorted first.)

Ok, removed the carby and I am in the process of installing a new kit through it. Dropped the Transmission pan and noticed that there was a bolt that has broken off on the inside of the trans and just sitting in the pan along with its split washer. Looks like its meant to be 1 of 2 large bolts which is located roughly in the middle of the transmission (a rectangular plate connected to this piston looking part maybe the rear servo?![]()
What trans / diff / engine oil should I use? (I want to get everything right for its first service)
Will post a few pics up of the ms65 once I get the car back to a suitable standard for this high quality forum.

Your secondaries also may not be working. Mine weren't in the carby i had on my 4m when i bought it.
Made a HUGE difference when i put a carby with working vacuum secondaries on it!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Also where can I can a list of part numbers that relate to my car model/year. Need some parts numbers for the transmission (mostly bolts and seals)? Do toyota still stock parts for these car?
Can't help on the part numbers sorry.. and i can pretty much garuntee toyota won't have any parts for your car on the system.. you can have trouble getting bits for AE92 corolla's these days!!
If your tranmission is the same as mine, its a borg warner 35 (bw35) which was also used in valiants, falcons etc etc through the 70's and 80's.. so getting bits for that shouldn't be a problem from repco or somewhere like that..

Thanks - MS55 - rep+1Ok, build/ID plate has no reference to what trans is in the car. Where can I look to identify what trans I have? When I removed the pan I noticed on the inside while looking up the number "212" printed in red, does this mean anything? Sump is square if that sheds any light. Its really hard to find much information on the net regarding these cars.
I also need the two bolts that hold the rear servo in the trans (the rubber seal has also perished)?

Hey 4age_fun to i.d the trans: take the filter off and the pan and take it into an autoparts shops and look through the books at pics or match them against the trans service kits in the shop. the ms65s came with either the Jap trans or the BW's.

i had the same hessitation/loss of power probem with an MS75 once.
turned out to be the fuel filter, which was the origional one fitted from day one. i replaced it with an aftermarket one and away it went.

Ah yeah.. the fuel filter left me stranded a couple of weeks after i bought mine. I was about an hour from home. Had to leave the car there overnight (didn't know what the problem was) and towed it home the next day. Found out it was the fuel filter.. and where was the only one in southern tassie available? Yep, the repco store which was only 5 minutes walk from where it broke down! doh!
Ok, my trans is a BW. The carb is getting plenty of fuel but I have noticed that the secondaries are not opening under full throttle. I have now stripped the engine bay to clean/paint everything up. Also had to re-sleeve the brake master cylinder and put a new seal kit through it. Photos coming soon.
