Hey has anyone removed a 7M to do rings etc then put it back in. How hard is it?
Before anyone carries on about 1J, 2J etc, that is out of my budget this moment, just want reliabilty from 7M for the next year then conversion time![]()
disconnect auto & remove starter
remove radiator
remove all intake piping & throttle cables etc
take off a/c compressor & p/s pump. leave in engine bay
remove exhaust manifold. leave in engine bay
undo engine mounts if they arent already busted
lift out motor
loosen timing belt tensioner
remove head -leave cams in & inlet manifold on
remove sump
remove big end caps
push pistons out of bores
hone bores
re-ring pistons
install pistons & big end caps
reinstall head & timing belt
drop motor back into engine bay.
connect auto, accesories & ex manifold.
reinstall radiator
fill with appropriate fluids (use a running-in oil for the first few k's)
bed the rings in with heavy load and lots of engine braking
profit?

Difficulty scale 1-10, 1 being easy, 10 being impossible? Does the engine come straight up easily?
hard for me to say ive done it a bunch of times now having had the car for 6 or 7 years. its not super hard, inline engine in rwd format give plenty of room. can be done in a day (removing it that is)
the actual lifting it with the engine crane can be tricky, if the engine mounts arent broken they tend to catch here and need some prying to get off. a good tip is to undo the top bolt on the mount where the motor sits and also take out all (i think 3) bolts that hold the mount to the xmember.
as for doing the rings, would depend if uve done this or built an engine before.

No worries. I am in the process of buying a car and was going to be a cressida. If so, then probably have to do the head at least in some stage that I own it. lol Another member was selling their cerssida and he said it needed rings so I was just seeing as to who might have done this before to guage how difficult it may be..
head is a piece of cake and the job can be done easy in a weekend if u can get it machined quick enough on a saturday arvo (not always easy to do!)
re-ringing one is a bit more work and its hard to not go overboard while its apart

my mate and i were able to remove the top half of the motor (7mge-mx83)in about 4hours, if we had a hoist, i am sure we'd would of been able to take the motor out(in a single day, the exhaust bolts wouldnt come loose so that would of slowed us down, but your best to take the gbox out with the motor, makes likes a lil easier IMO....most of the day he was just standing there watching me, his first time doing anything massively mechanical btw (this was Friday just gone btw, so sweltering heat slowed us down a bit aswell! aswell as food!

in basicly a day with the auto attached still we removed the 7m from one and 1jz from the other and traded both over, fitted 1jz and got running and fitted 7m so it wouldnt fall out,
for the 7m. if you know what your doing to a degree for a 1-10 id say maybe a 6. just tricky getting the bellhousing bolts if you dont have enought/proper tools/extensions etc etc
non turbo makes it easyer also![]()

piece of piss, if it takes you more than a day to get it out then theres something wrong.
just disconnect and label everything, and lift it out out engine+gbox together. if you wanna do it easy, then drop the crossmember out with the engine attached. not sure how much of a bitch this is with an MX83, but with my Z20, the crane was about 2inches short of having enough reach to get it all in the right position to get it out and back in over the top. nothing that a bit of muscle wont fix though.
defintely easier the drop the entire crossmember+engine+gbox than to lift it over the top.
i thought the PS rack was attached to the x-member??? which is was hinders you from "drop the entire crossmember+engine+gbox than to lift it over the top."
.....if we had a hoist we coulda ripped it out, but i didnt think that (with his skill level, basically a newbie) that we would of been in the position to rip it out but we were...i cant get the manifold bolts off, thats wat slowed me down!!!

well we did it on a mx83 not a month ago, we ended up having to drop the whole thing back together due to restrictions with moving space, a hill on driveway and man power but over the period of 1pm-7 we managed to totallly remove the xmember and swaybars, get the body up, relise that we cant do it and the crane was gunna drop the body soon due to a short chain so we dropped it back down, bolted it all up again and then removed the 1jz and piss the body off outta the way .
and totally agreed that doing the whole thing with the motor and gearbox together as i hate having to do all the little bolts on the back of the Toqure converter![]()
