Hey guys
I've just purchased an AE82 Corolla Twin Cam as a bit of a fun weekend toy.
Question 1: Power steering
As it's lowered with wider tyres it's far too heavy for my GF to manage safely without power steering. I'm sure I can just get the rack/pump/brackets from another AE82 but am concerned about other stuff like steering column, etc that I found out about the hard way when I did the engine & power steering swap on my AE90.
Any info here would be appreciated, also tips on the best way to go about it... raise car, support engine/box and drop out suspension/crossmember/steering as one unit?
Question 2: Brakes
It needs rotors & pads for RWC so I will probably do an upgrade while I'm at it. Worth asking though, are the rotors on the Twin Cam the same as the normal models? If so it might be cheap/easy to get it on the road with a good set from a wrecker.
If not, I've read the FAQ on the brake upgrade but as I'm taling an AE82 and not an AE92 I just wanted to check once-and-for-all that the small and large AE92 brake setups will bolt straight on (was there any resolution re: the wheel bearings possibly being different?) as an upgrade... and also that there are no additional headaches in using the 'Superstrut' brakes on an AE82 as opposed to an AE92. If I went that way, I would probably get caliper adapters made up so I could run the full-size DBA disc... no forseeable problems here with clearance etc?

yes, the power steering column end shaft is much shorter than the manual rack
i also did this conversion last year. (when the driveline was out, much easier)
you'll have to fit the aircon bracket and compressor to run the power steering belt
some ae82's came out with 17mm and 19mm min thickness front rotors (check yours before replacing)
not sure about brake upgrades
doing high speed cornering on a front wheel drive is not my idea of fun
understeer/torque steer etc,etc,etc...

the brake upgrades are the same for ae92 series 1 and ae82, as they are the same brakes. ae92 (ae92GTZ are same as well) series 2 brakes are a good upgrade, i have them on mine and it stops pretty damn quick. super strut would be the next upgradeable brakes that will bolt on (with a little grinding to the caliper bracket, and st185 rotor machining) will need to have 15inch wheels for clearance though. then you can put 4pot celica calipers if you want. im unsure of the rotor to use but i do know the calipers fit..
Unless someone knows where I can get a set of those gay-sounding 'super strut' calipers for cheaps, then I'll do the bolt-on AE92 SX/GTi conversion I think!
I'm still interested in those Renault rotors, if I can find a caliper to suit or get a bracket made up cheaply.
