hi there have someone who can sell me the above engine but i am unsure as to whether it would fit into my ta23? also i have not heard of this '16rg' engine so i am just checking it out before i commit to buying. cheers!
Hi,
I've also not heard of a 16rg either. As far as i know in the "r" series engines the only twin cam engines were the 8rg and the 18rg. The 8rg later became the 10r(the g was left off but still a twin cam) Check the build plate of the car it came out of to confirm if it is a factory thing or not. got a funny feeling that the heads may be interchangeable, but there would be a need for different pistons as the 16r head shape wasn't a hemi combustion design. I also think from memory that the 16r was 1.8 or 1.9l so compression will be down too.
Some pics of the 16r are here.

Get some pics or something as i'm interested in it's origins and good luck

I took the engine out yesterday as it's gonna go into my ta22 so it's back to 18rc in it now. Once the celica is done i'll sell the lux. Fun times

bnicho has a 16rg in his corona. They do exist. Dunno much about them other than that i've personally seen on. Also, i've seen a 9r in a shovel nose coupe.
edit: I've just clicked the link in roadkill's first post and now realise my post is less than helpful.![]()

No, my Corona HT has an 18RGU now. It had a 16R (SOHC) not a 16RG when I brought it out from Japan. I have considered building a 16RG using the original block and an 18RG head. The 16R was more free-revving than an 18R, but less torquey.Originally Posted by Slim

No harm done.Originally Posted by Slim
It might be worth mentioning at this point that the UK and Europe market 70's Coronas had a 16R, according to the sales brochures. So there's a new source for all those looking for 16R rods!![]()

there was no 8rg, it's just a colloquial which has been adopted for the 10R
the g designation was not in effect when 10r was designed/released, but becuase it was basically an 8r with twin cam, ppl have now started calling them retrospectively an 8r-g
remember reading this info somewhere

To get an 18R-G (no such animal as a 16R-G) into your TA23, you need the RA23 or RA28 or RA35 or RA40:
crossmembers - engine and gearbox
gearbox
tailshaft (or an auto TA23 tailshaft)
clutch lines and clutch slave
struts and brakes (I believe these were bigger than the TA23 items)
Radiator
engine bay wiring harness (would have to be RA23 or RA28 - or modify the existing one)
coil
starter
modify exhaust
modify throttle setup... your choice change the linkages to suit, or convert to cable
possibly move the gear shifter hole
There is a bit of work involved, but it can be done by an astute individual.
