Hi guys,
Got a bit of question for you. I've finally got my 2tgeu going and have still gotta check dizzy timing. when I warmed the engine up and was 'pulsing' the throttle to check the responsivness , as the revs were dropping towards 1000rpm I would get this rattle, kinda like clatter, clatter, clatter just before it was back to idle.
Now I checked compression, all around 150 mark, cam timing is set up per 2tg\
manual. Could my timing chain, top one be loose? could the 'clatter' be the chain jumping off the gears?
The car runs fine. The head gets pretty hot, I can touch it for about 2-3 sec before it starts to hurt.
The temp gauge reads about 60-70 degs. Oh before I forget. the radiator is hot on the top but cold on the bottom. the W/P thermostat should open up about 85deg, so i'm not too concerned.

Yeah sounds like something is loose. The 2T-G is pretty quiet (in stock form).
Do the usual checks:
- around the engine bay
- water pump/alternator/crank pulley is not loose
- exhaust bolts
- remove the cam cover and look down the timing chain to see if every thing lines up.
- oil the inside of the dizzy too as the weights can get a little noisy (a bit of WD40 should do fine).

2T-G - Half the valves but twice the fun.
Well had a good loook around the engine bay, also took the cam cover off and rechecked all cam/ head bolts. All ok there. Re adjusted tensioner, and the noise was still there.
Re-did dizzy timinng, 12deg btdc idle 1000rpm. few quick revs and it has seemed to go have gone atm. Idle is till a little rough, is this normal?
Also it seems a bit noisy under the bonnect aswell.
Its been awhile since I've owned a dizzy car, is it meant to be a bit clickerty clackerty?
even inside, you can still hear the tica tica tica tica . :?

The dizzy should be pretty quiet, the only ticking you should hear are the injectors.
Does the head look lubricated when you removed the cam cover? is there a puddle of oil under the cams and around the bucket? Without sufficient oil, tapping noises can come from the cam hitting the bucket.
Where abouts is the noise coming from?
How are you cam to bucket clearances?

There seems to puddles of oil in the around the cam and buckets. there was more oil in the exhaust buckets.
You could be onto something w810scHow would you quiet them down???
The Sump is full, there is def oil getting up to the head...
Pour more oil up there? lol

if the cam to bucket clearances are to big, you will be able to hear loud tapping noises. If there is oil in the head under the cam around the bucket then you don't have to worry about oil starvation in the head.
The 2T-G leans/tilts to the left side so you will get a greater oil puddle in the exhaust side.
What is your oil pressure?

The oil light goes out within 2 seconds of startup. If there is too bigger gap between cam and bucket, do I need to buy new shims?

guide or tensioner may be loose
if you need shims made up, i have a contact for you just pm me
Thanks styler hope fully I won't have too![]()

well after a bit more of a listen, it sounds like the tappets...
guess I'm going to have to take care of that soon![]()

valve clearances
IN: 0.29 ± 0.05 mm (0.011 ± 0.002 in)
OUT: 0.34 ± 0.05 mm (0.013 ± 0.002 in)
here is the formula for selecting shim sizes
Inlet = Thickness of used shim + (valve clearance measured - .011in [which is .29mm] )
Exhaust = Thickness of used shim + (valve clearance measured - .013in [which is .34mm] )

The valve lash/gap should be one of the first things to check after an engine is run the first time. NOISE is good, as long as it isn't to bad(totally subjective) and then it isn't as bad as something that is much too tight but silently killing itself. If most or all of them sound the same and none sound excessive(totally subjective), leave it theF alone. If 1 or more sound loud compared to all the others, then it has to be looked at & adjusted for sure.Originally Posted by Neverland

Thanks Allencr, they all are pretty noisy. But after driving yest. they actually seems to be getting quieter.Oh well. The car seem to have no illness' (tested by driving her different ways, grandma, flooging , cruising). alll readings still normal, water temp, no oil leaks, fuild looss etc. One thing Is the Idle is not smooth... she wants to hunt around 1000rpm , but then again I still don't have a 'proper exhaust'. (currently exhtractors with the old 1 3/4inch "wedged" into it. any idea how to adjust it?
Also what does the screw under the black plug in the AFM do?
