My car has that black blanket sorta stuff on the underside of the bonnet.. Is it any use or can i pull it out.. Why did toyota put it there.. I really wanna take it out but wont if its usefull...
Thanks,
Chris.
title says it all. insulation.. sound heat etc also used as a garnish you can tear it off if you want although it may be abit ugly undernneath
Noise and heat... The usual reasons insulation is used.
Yeah i figured that..
Isnt it better to get the heat out of the engine bay not keep it in.. I dont care much if its a little louder, probably better so i can hear more problems..
I spose ill take it out them..
Thanks,
Chris.
It protects your paint from the heat....hence the warning for if you have a turbo or 2 sitting under it.

what if you turbos got some good heat shielding?
Previous Rides: JZA80, GA70 GT, RA63 GT x2, TA61 GT, TA63.
Even my ae92 corolla had developed enough heat that it started to crack and dull the paint on the bonnet. The motor is standard and the bonnet has no matting.

easy way to fix problem is to cut gaping hole in bonnet... that way, the paitn won't be affected AND you let the heat out of the engine bay...
not so good for sound or low flying birds/children...![]()

Or you could be like someone else and remove headlights and bonnet for increased airflow aye Stu![]()

and toyota have the Celica GT-Four which have holes in the bonnet, but also mesh and directed snorkels so low flying birds and children won't get in...Originally Posted by oldcorollas

Good heat shielding, still has lots of heat under bonnet.Originally Posted by Jackel
Just the whole engine bay heats up, rather then a specific site getting blistering.
Dads Commo has paint starting to die from the engine bay heat, and it has most of the stuff in tact!
Don't pull it off
Stick some washers under the hinges on the bonnet to lift it up 1/2" and pull that rubber strip off the back along the top of the firewall. You'll see a noticeable drop in temperature, although you could end up sucking in warm air into your cabin.
I've just removed the strip on my Levin and it doesn't get so hot in traffic.

I've also seen bonnets get massive flex once raised a bit, my old Supra had massive flex when up like that, and a guy I knows S13 gets a bit of flex/bounce too...
But it's not noticeable from drivers seat. But outside it is.
I agree with the whole area being hot but having a close proximity between say a turbo(or any other hot surface for that matter) and the bonnet will definately have a greater affect on the painted area it is closer to than anywhere else.Originally Posted by Kyosho
Keep in mind that with a car travelling the other side of the bonnet will have heat removed via the air passing over it.

Except that makes it worse...Originally Posted by TERRA Operative
The base of the windscreen is a high pressure zone, not a low pressure zone.
ie, its good for air intake, not air exhaust.
Air intake from the rear of the bonnet makes it worse for air intake at the front of the bonnet (ie, where air is needed to cooler the radiator)
Engine bays are designed so that all the air flow through the radiator, and out under the firewall.
true, but in sydney, where everything is a traffic jam.. maybe it is better
as soon as you start moving tho, it will suck...

I was trying to remember last night the reasoning behind it causing heat up...Originally Posted by CrUZida

Not only is it destroying cooling properties, but bonnets etc are designed to sit a certain way for crumpling.
In an accident, if those bolts snap, or strip out (It's easier to happen now that you have less thread in there, and more leverage on the bolt) that bonnet is coming straight through your front windscreen.
Yeah i think im going to leave it on and not try the raising of the bonnet.. Is there a good way to ecourage more air to flow under the fire wall? My car does seem to run a little hotter than my last one... ( same car)
Thanks for the tips. Plus rep for all.. By the way. No big honkin' turbos in sight of this engine...
Thanks,
Chris.
