7M/1J starter motors

from memory, 7M auto and 7M manual starter motors are exactly the same.

i also recall 7M auto and 1J auto starter motors being really, really similar (but not 100%)

and i recall 1J Auto and Manual starter motors being same same.

so, heres my question:

i have a mate with a manual Jzz30 with a fucked starter motor, and i happen to have a 7M starter in the cupboard.

he needs the car off the road for the shortest amount of time possible (roll starting FTW ATM) so i cant really take the old one out to compare, and we havent had the luxury of finding a 1J one for sale... so who knows how long it'd be off the road for if it isnt same.

JZ Auto and Manual are definately the same, as the starter bolts through the backplate of the block anyway.
From what i have read on ToyotaCressida forums 7M US starters are the same as JZ US starters, which means i would assume that it is the same the world over....

What may vary is the % of reduction etc, but i doubt that would change too much.

as long as it starts the car, im happy.

i know the auto/manual are the same because everyones doing manual conversions without touching the starters, and i recall 1J and 7M being stupidly similar!

but id need someone that can confirm 100% before i start taking anything apart.

I've placed a 5m starter (same as 7m really) on a 1jz block, it looked to fit fine

I suspect they fit a treat...try it take pics and tell us for sure.

AFAIK 7M and 1J manual use the same clutch kit, which means same diameter flywheel, which would hopefully mean the ring gear is the same (if thats the correct term for where the starter contacts the flywheel?)

AFAIK the only different between 7M and 1J manual flywheels is the bolt number/spacing in the centre for the crank.

have you tried repairing the starter motor
most of the time it will just be the contacts which are available from an auto sparky for about 20 dollars and take about 10 mins to fit once the starter is out

well initially it was the contacts, until he overheated the motor and a massive plume of smoke came out from under the CLOSED bonnet :|

but 7M looks like it bolts from the front of the motor, while the 1J bolts from the gearbox side, so fuck knows how that works?!?!?!

How does that work? My 1J starter bolts from the engine side, just replaced it 2 weeks ago. Looked similar to a 7M item and interestingly nothing like a 2J starter

this is usually the case where schwarzenegger has tightened up the bolts and consequently stripped the thread in the starter. easy fix ofcourse is to put a nut on the outside

No, he's right, 7M starters dont have threaded holes but I have an old M series starter here that does, 5M I think I got it from (not that that means that's where it originated)

both my JZA70 and this JZZ30 bolt from the gearbox side, and thread into the starter casing.

the 7M however, has no thread in the mounting holes on the casing, leading me to believe (along with the marks made by bolt pressure on the opposite side of the casing) that the bellhousing is threaded on the 7M, (MA70 GT limited 1990 Auto).

so ill wait till i pull out the motor and compare them, physically, they're a completely different size, but the main part of the starter still looks compatible.

trying again tomorrow, will keep ya posted.

oh, and Schwarzenegger did do up the bolts, i had a spanner hanging off the 14mm spanner on the bolt, all my weight on it, and it didnt budge...

might try some penetrating (ehhehehehe) oil and give it another shot, might even start the motor to warm it up, at the risk of burning the fuck out of my hand on a hot motor..

Ah, I see what youre getting at, you mean the bolts come through from the gearbox side? 7M can go either way, but you need nuts on the ends of the bolts because the starter holes arent threaded. Nothing has a threaded bellhousing

Although it looks like you've found it, yes 7M start motors bolt in and work on a 1JZ.

I had a 7M-GTE auto starter on my 1JZ-GTE for a few months, only difference is the 7M starter motor requires a nut and bolt setup (which is a whore to use) as opposed to the 1JZ starter which has threaded holes in the starter housing.
