i know the 81 has an oil cooler in the top of the rad which can just be bypassed but is there anything else thats different, can i just get a stock MX83 one to replace it

It is from a manual gx81 and the engine did not have a hydro fan.

    If that is any help.

I ran a JZX81 fan and shroud on my Cressida for a while before replacing it with a brand new MX83 Alloy core one.

The only differences that i could see were..
    1. Aforementioned cooler in the top tank
    2. Bolt holes for the fan shroud were slightly different
    3. Drain plug was mounted differently

other than that, it bolted straight up and worked fine..

A GX 81 is a single core jobbie , wont be good at cooling a 1j

so u replaced the jzx81 rad for a mx83 one and it was all fine.

what did you do about the hydro fan bolt holes, did u just not bother to fit one or 2 bolts or did u need to mod it

This might sound a little stoopid, although I thought I knew, how do you tell how many cores the radiator has?

Cores of the two look the same
    The end tanks are different
So no you cant use a MX83 rad with the hydro fan as the shroud wont bolt up
Using a MX83 rad with thermos is fine

Where is the leak you have now
If its not in the end tanks them put your JZX81 ones onto a MX83 core

Not sure on the gx81 radiator, if the 1g ran a hydro fan then it will be fine

The jzx81 radiator has the temp probe bung in the bottom tank for the hydro fan controller aswell.

I've got a good MX83 radiator and a JZX81 radiator will stuffed top tank down the side of my shed if you're after one.

You can make the Mx83 radiator work with the Hydro fan and shroud, 2 top tank bolts fit the shroud holes, the bottom left shroud hole needs slotting, bottom right not even close but will sit OK on a ridge on the bottom tank, you then need a cheap trans cooler and plumb the hydro fan to the bottom tank where the Trans cooler set up used to go, get an inline sender piece for the bottom radiator hose and away you go. Not perfect but cheaper than a new JZX81 radiator and this does work, my bro drove from Sydney to Tasmania no problems at all and still going strong.

Sorry to hi-jack, but on a semi-relevant issue, can somebody please tell me what bottom radiator hose will fit when hooking up an MX83 radiator to a 1JZ?
Theres a lexus IS300 (2JZ-GE) hose in the Mackay catalogue that looks good, has anyone tried that one?

hmm thats odd because the outlet on mine is too big for the 7M hose, so it definitely won't fit on. My engine is from a JZX83, don't know if they are any different across the models?
