    Default TA22 Leaks in Rain

    Howdy,

Noticed in the rain on the weekend hat after awhile water starts to drip on my foot and also drips in the passenger foot area as well.I think it somehow gets in from the vents before the front windscreen.Any ideas on how to fix it?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I'd be looking real close at your window seals, especially at the bottom 'cos water can get in there and track down inside behind the dash and onto your carpet.

cant remember if the TA22's have a frame around the top of the window...?

    i dont think they do...?

if they dont, thats probably where its leaking from, my supras only 17 years old (not young, but young compared to a 22) and it leaks like a sieve from there!

also, look for water tracks above the leak, do it after you wash the car, and look above the leak all round for wet patches/runs, then follow it upwards and you'll find it.

water with dye in it helps, easier to see, but it can stain the interior.

lol... saw the thread title and had to laugh... first thing that came into my head was "DUH!" every celica owner i've spoken to complains about the same thing...

dana just rain proofed her windows with a strategically placed tube of silicone sealant... strategically placed everywhere around the edge of the glass that is.

i doubt it's the vents in front of the screen, unless there's rust in the well beneath the vent even then, i believe those wells trail out to the side of the car behind the quarter panel.

the vents in my car were rusted through. and the hole was directly above drivers feet, so i wouldn't rule it out just yet.

If you are concerned about the possibility of rust causing the leak. The main culprit, is the boxed section in the air chamber above the heater. But if your feet are getting wet, almost a sure bet the windscreen seal is leaking. Even new seals will leak. Just have to make sure you add heaps of windscreen sealant between the glass, and the seal.

Aaaand do not put acetic cure silicone anywhere near your Classic Celica, that crap just promotes rust, by eating through the paint, and then into the metal.

    cheers Chuck.

Thanks for all the info.I think that the seals are pretty old so will check them first then look at maybe the rust issue.Hopefully it isjust the window seals.

    Cheers Pete

Silastic Windscreen sealant works well - i've used it a few times with success.

if you used it with success... why would you need to use it again? and again?

lol... sounds a bit like "i quit smoking successfully... 5 times!"

I have had luck getting my window seals to re-seal properly just by treating the existing ones with armour all. A liberal application weekly for a few months sorted it, and stopped an annoying squeek/air leak while I was at it. So if it is your window seals, give that a try?

I have used this method quite a few times on different cars to find those elusive leaks. Mix a couple of teaspoons of talcum powder with some metho, spray the solution around the seals. I use an old suction type spray gun, a trigger spray bottle would also work. The metho evaporates, leaving the talcum powder behind. Liberally apply copious quantities of water, walk away, have a cup of coffe/bottle of amber fluid, then check to see where the water has washed the powder off. Adjust windows, replace seals, reseal screens, replace boot seal, whatever it takes to prevent the water getting in.

    cheers Chuck.

Mate my TA22 has the same leak.As Witzl said windscreen Sealant works but I'm guessing it's a rust hole in the bottom corner of your windscreen. I'm currently in the process of repairing my car now. Where is the water dripping if it's on the accelerator pedal as mine was I lay money you have rust.

All i can recommend is to remove the chrome strip are seem to hold water in there. and run a wide bead of sealant around the screen making sure you seal from the rubber to the car frame. Other option is to remove windscreen and cut the rust out.

one of the very popular leak point is the 2 bolt holes that hold the guard on, make sure that there is bolts in the rear most point, inside the door.
