All this talk about fuel pumps and I forgot all about filters![]()
What filters are you guys using and where have you got them within your system?
I'm thinking about using some of the bling Earls filters(depending on price). Fitting one between the main tank/lift pump and one between the high pressure pump/engine.
Should one be fitted between the surge tank and high pressure pump?

Filter with threaded AN-6 fittings = $70.13
Filter with threaded AN-8 fittings = $90.75
Above prices are the same for the Pre filter and final filter.
Filter with barbed fittings(comes as final filter only) = $61.88

Putting a filter before a high-pressure pump isn't recommended. Besides, the filter before the surge tank should stop any crap getting in the surge tank to begin with.Originally Posted by Cool1

Replacement filter for most commodores, 300zx, patrol, the list goes on.
$16, I'll just replace it every year.
Main reason for choice was I wanted a filter to go in the factory external fuel pump location (converting to intank pump) and this was the first filter we found with approximately the same OD.
The 1UZ's engine bay is no place for a fuel filter, especially after you get extractors.

Anyone know of any other filters that are around that have threaded fittings on both ends?
Yeah I want to try and stay away from the push on fittings, they piss me off when i'm trying to replace them while laying upside down under the car!
Depends what sort of filter you run. I have a 100 micron strainer type filter before my high pressure pump. It cost me $15 from Speed Technology. Whilst a filter before the surge tank should theoretically suffice, unfortunately scale/other gunk can develop in the surge tank itself, loosen and eventually find its way into the high pressure pump destroying it.Originally Posted by Norbie

EA Falcon and some V8 Commodore filters are great for conversions - push on fittings, linear and roughly the same OD as ignition coils, so you can use an old ignition coil bracket to mount them securely.

Do fuel filters normally have the filter element size/type printed on them?
Generally not. Most shop will have NFI if you specifically ask for a 100 micron strainer filter - well Bursons and Repco both gave me blank stares. I didn't even bother with SuperCheap - a 15 yo girl from Heidelberg West supporting her newborn with a $2.50/hr job doesn't know or care - I swear that shop is only good for selling car fresheners....

Would factory Falcoon filters be fine for pre lift pump and post high pressure pump?
I use a cheapo Ryco plastic thing before my lift pump, and then between the surge tank and high pressure pump i use a 100micron strainer, like GT, and then a stock AE92 EFI filter after the high pressure pump.
I quite like the AE92 EFI filter, comes with female threaded ends, and also has an integral bracket.

Yeah I was thinking about using a factory ST205 filter because of the attached bracket and the threaded fittings, but I recken they would be pricey.
I think I want to stay clear of the plastic type filters cause they'll be mounted under the car! Danger danger!!

Um, i got mine from EFI Hardware in Vic. Doesnt help much I know. I think Petroject have them though, and they seem to be nation wide.
The ST205 i think has the same fuel filter as the AE92. The AE92 one ranks in at a hefty $35 though
Plastic type ones can be a bit nasty especially out of the car. Mine is mounted in the spare tyre well and so is protected from the elements, and lets me visually confirm the quality of the fuel.

metal ones with barbed fittings either end work pretty well if you dont mind using OEM type stuff.
i think im using a valvoline VF6 or something on my sprinter, just go to your local supercheap/repco with a vernier caliper and open all their fuel filters till you find one you like with the right diameter ends.
Would an OEM filter from a falcoon or similar be too much of a restriction before the lift pump?
Falcon filters would be high pressure wouldnt it? If so i wouldnt use it, they tend to be nasty at low pressure.

I'm using the standard Toyota 2J filter on mine. Just threw it on in-line just before the fuel rail.
Yeah i'm pretty sure the falcon filter would normally be fitted after the pump.
Not many Pre-EA Foulcans were efi. most of these though used placcy filters. There was either a commonwhore or foulcan efi filter that was female thread both ends, and the hefty price of about 12 bux for a ryco item, dont remember part number, or car it came off, but head down to autobarn, and sift through their range of efi filters. While your at it, quiz them if there is a low pressure metal can filter about. I think they may even stock strainer filters n all.Originally Posted by takai
