    Question 2JZ-GE VVTi won't rev

    Hi guys,

Most of the way through a 2JZ-GE VVTi (non fly by wire model) conversion in an mx32 cressida.
i am running a w58 behind it and using the factory ecu
engine from a JDM JZS161 halfcut (cable throttle, no factory immbiliser)

my problem is it wont rev. it starts fine, idles perfect for a few seconds then starts to miss then dies.
throttle does nothing. as in its like im not touching it, i was thinking maybe the trc butterfly is shut?

    engine light also stays on.

i am running an external fuel pressure reg set to around 30psi as these engines run the silly returnless rail system (pretty sure it needs to be higher but thats irrelevant right now)

anyone else had this issue after a conversion? engine ran and revved perfectly fine in the halfcut.

Might pay for you to do some research but from the quick check I did it looks like even though it has a accelerator cable it is in fact a drive by wire system as in a lot of the early fly by wire Toyota set up's, a simple check to confirm its drive by wire is take off the intake ducting so you are looking at the throttle butterfly down the throat of the throttle body ( engine off ) & give it full throttle & you will notice at the last bit of the range of movement the throttle will actually crack open slightly ( its a limp home mode Toyota have built into the linkages of the throttle so if the fly by wire was to fail in the original car set up you can floor the throttle & actually limp home etc ) ..

If it misses & stutters like you say it could be the lack of fuel pressure or again the drive by wire as it does idle control too but the missing & stuttering sounds possibly like fuel ..

    did u power the maf
90% of problems with revving is fuel issues
bump fuel pressure up to 45 psi
unplug maf plug see if it makes any difference
if no difference then u have maf wiring or maf problem

it does actually crack the throttle a tiny bit if you go full throttle... what a strange setup!
im used to the older style non vvti-i toyotas injected engines.

yeah might up the pressure. i just didnt think it would be an issue as it starts perfect then slowly dies as if the pressure drops off, but its not, it sits fine.
ill give it a shit this weekend.

yes the maf should be powered, ill start poking the multimeter around and find out.
seems it might be in limp mode (hence the fly by wire accel not working) which could cause limp mode.

Check my notes for JZS161 GTE wiring, most should apply to non turbo also...

Well all is good now, engine runs fine and idles and revs properly.

anyone know what fuel pressure these run from factory? around 38psi? and has anyone ever run bigger cams (like 272's) with the factory ecu?
basically this car is just built to be thrashed around and sound cool, and i have run into some cheap cams.
