hello everyone i cant find a rebuild kit for the boxes listed.
The americans must have different boxes, their ebay rebuild kits for a '1978-1991 w55,w56 and w58' are all for cast iron intermediate plates/centre plate.
only the late model w58's 88+ had the cast iron centre plate as far as i know.
what i have is;
1)an alloy intermediate plate W57. i can tell this from the no. of teeth on 5th gear
2)an alloy intermediate plate w58. i can tell this from the no.of teeth on 5th gear. this matches the ratio in the toyota manual for aus delivered ma70/mxsomethingsomething but it does not have double syncromesh rings for 2nd and 3rd as listed in the manual. probably only for us rough cants here in 'straya.
3)in my car that actualy has w57 on the build plate (87 gz20) i have what must be an 88+ w58. as it has a cast iron intermediate plate/centre plate.
im in brisbane just so you know, but does anyone know where i can get rebuild kits from locally or interstate? the shops i have rung have no idea what im on about.
thanks, lachlan

There is a gearbox and diff place in sydney offering refurbished w series boxes on ebay, maybe give them a call.

Thanks hypo23, I didnt think to do that. I've contacted difftrans (difftrans.com) in syndey, he knew the gearboxes! He also told me that the kit for a cast iron and alloy centre plate box are the same. Which is contradictory to what I have heard on this here internet that the bearings are wider for the cast iron centre plate w58?
The fella from diff trans said the difference was the double type synchros. Of which neither of my gearboxes have. In the toyota service manual for a W58 it states there is a double synchro for 2nd and 3rd, however it does not say whether it has cast iron or alloy centre plate. The ratios in one of my gearboxes match the ratios in the book, however without the double synchros.
Also, he said the cast iron centre plate boxes MAY have a longer input shaft, however he has not seen it himself.

i'm going to take a semi-educated guess off everything i've seen and say that the listing you are talking about in your first post may be misleading, only the later w58's had the iron sandwich plates to the best of my knowledge (seen a few dis-assembled early w boxes) and same deal for the synchros. Early boxes would be ma61 etc and late would be behind na jz motors, no idea about ma70 stuff.
The synchros from the late ones may be interchangable with the early one though, similar thing with the synchros in the e series fwd boxes.
Anyone have a w58 in good condition they want to sell???
