I've got a set of GAB S/S coilovers.

Do you know if they can be rebuilt?

I had a google of parts for the S/S suspension, and this place was the cheapest I could find online.

Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Auto Parts and Accessories

But they wouldn't ship internationally / accept international cards.

First price is through toyotapartszone, second is amayama. Both are in USD. Big difference!

    Any coilover can be rebuilt.
In NZ we can rebuild any brand. But its not very cheap at all. Most people end up buying new!
Usually its $250NZD per corner to rebuild.

so I guess secondhand coilovers are more or less worthless then?

By the time you spend $1k rebuilding, it's just as much as your new ones!

just a note iv read somewhere that the later SS models AE111 had variable steering system like when parking the steering became lighter and higher speeds the steering became more neutral, i may need confirmation on this but iv read that over time this caused the steering feel to become 'vague' because of used steering fluid and the system became less effective. My Ae111 has K-sport coil overs with super strut, and yes it is a cut and weld job to link with the banana arm. In my opinion it is way to stiff for normal roads, it has ruined the ride quality and its actually slower around backstreets cause it bounces and is unstable over mid corner bumps. only over smooth roads the car comes into its own. its not lowered much, the lower arms still point down not flat or up so to leave proper alignment and travel but like i said its way too stiff, may think about changing spring rates to more street friendly. currently have 12kg front and 8 rear. what are the recommendations out there for a street rate??? i was thinking 6kg front and 4kg back. but yea pulling into driveways and steep inclines has the car on 3 wheels or 2. i am also thinking of going back to normal set up with just heavy duty shocks and stock lowered springs with better sway bars and bushes and also the stock strut barce is useless, iv replaced the stock one with aftermarket and made a massive difference. wat do you guys think on spring rates???

12kg and 8kg springs?!?! Wow, no wonder it's too stiff, you're waaaaay hard... 8 and 6 is about right for a street driven track car..... 6 and 4 are about right for street.

    Hi there Timbo. . .

Yep; USDM prices are fantastic*; I wouldn't be surprised if they're cheaper than a Metro Tokyo dealer's. BUT before any AE111 owners get too excited the parts you quoted are for < JDM > AE101 series Corolla / Levin / Trueno. I entered the equivalent AE111 SS part Nos and they were unavailable.

Still, $142 for No.1 Lower Arm / $214 for No.1+Camber arms! That's 40% of what Amayama charged me for equivlent AE111 arm, and 20% of Toyota AUS price! . JESUS. . . I'm gonna be sick! All the same I'm surprised a US retailer is listing JDM model parts; maybe there's a demand for AE101 McP > SS conversions over there??

    * Check in ToyoDIY to see if the part you are after was listed in the US < tick US market box>. If it is go to < toyotapartscheap.com > and plug the number into search box. They DO ship O/S (i.e. to AUS) and pricing is comparable to Toyota Parts Zone. {Shipping can be expensive for one-off items though}.

I've gotten stuff off them for my AE92 and depending on the component, the prices were significantly cheaper than ex. Japan < i.e. from Amayama >.

PS: It's not just us that get ripped off; I've been on Club.AE111.com; Toyota UK charges even more for SS parts than Toyota AUS. No surprise those guys have also wised up & now source ex. Japan or USA.

K-Sport - Well thats the first place where you have gone wrong (also D2 is like this as well stay away!). They must be one of the worst valved coilovers on the market. Overly stiff, like rocks and do not soak up bumps like a shock absorber is meant to.
Putting 6/4K springs into it isnt going to make a huge huge difference, it will actually make the ride real bouncy.
Why - Because they have been valved to suit high spring rates. But they actually over valve them by alot.
With shocks they should be valved to suit the springs they come with, and you can really only change the rates +/-2K or else you will get a poor quality ride.

My opinion - Sell them fast!!!!!

As for the steering, thats in the PS pump. Most cars have that. The valve inside the pump restricts oil flow when the pump is spinning at a certain speed. But lets through alot of oil at low rpm.

Exactly, so many people over here flick off their old coilovers in order to buy others that are in the lower $1k range.
But if your really liked the ride of your current ones then its worth getting them re-built.

Trying to remove the lower arms on the RHS has turned into a bloody saga; 8 hours later I still can't separate No.1 arm from Balljoint plate, and buckled my 3-leg puller in the process. I'm going to remove whole assembly & get it under a press. . .

Scouting Google I came accross this UK post from a guy that had same issues servicing SS on an ST205 Celica. REQUIRED READING for anyone working on SS suspension. Just like this guy; I changed arms on other side a few months ago in only 3 hours.

The article also has Torques for SS joints; ST205 components are heavier duty than AE101 / AE111 gear so I think I'll just subtract 10-15% from stated figures & go with that.

Changing 205 Super Strut Suspension for Toyota Celica 1994-99 (ST20x) Suspension Brakes Steering

    Note: (extract)

Ok, what things you should know before. . .

You may need a press. One of my ball joints required 2 tons of pressure to remove. I managed to break 3 ball joint splitters and 1 set of 3 leg bearing pullers on one side before giving up and using a press...on a plus note the other side was MUCH easier to remove - it seems to be the luck of the draw how difficult it is to remove!

This is a bit of a git of a job if the ball joints do not easily come away from the lower plate or the bottom of the shock absorber - Have a look at the other jobs to be done at the same time.

The job took me approx 8 hours one side and 2 hours the other. With this guide it should take you around 1.5 - 2 hours per side. I would suggest looking here at the parts before you decide to do the job. . .

Update: Did what I should have done in the 1st place (and what I'll no doubt do next time if I ever take apart a SS front end). . .

Namely, I unbolted both lower arms from the Chassis & plonked the assembly on a bench; inserted the offending Joint in a vice & wacked it with a 5kg Mallet - came out in 2 minutes. Glad that's over. Now for the steering pump. . . .

No idea mate, rebuilt certainly but same quality as original GAB? I doubt it. Some of the bigger names [Fulcrum, Heasman, etc] won't touch your coilovers unless its a brand they house and for good reason, they can source the original parts. Other 'suspension' specialist I contact claim they can totally rebuild/refresh my coilovers [TRD from memory these inquiries were for] but I checked around and the parts they used were sub-standard and within a few months the coilovers are kaput and need a rebuild again. SOOO long story short buy something that can be serviced locally if you want to keep them for a long time XD

Chase mate, ditch the coilovers you got, they're no good =|Even the TRD 8kg/6kg could be said to be harsh [According to my passengers], personally with SS you can get away with [As long as you have good shocks/coilovers to suit] 8/6, 7/5 even 6/4 if you wanted a comfy but sporty ride, I think 6/4 is similar to Tein SS?

Variable steering does exist, I can't remember exactly which ones came with it but yeah... Most of them aren't actually 'working' or so I'm told.

I get most of my parts from Toyota NZ through my friends there, get the parts fast and cheap ^_^
    Not here anymore!

TRD coilovers have super stiff valving. Ideal if your corolla is on the circuit running slicks. But not ideal for the majority of us.

Comfy ride doesn't come from the spring rate it comes from how the shocks has been valved.

    100% agree with this...

my Fortune Auto's in my IS200 are 9kgF 6kgR... and the car isn't exactly 'heavy'... 6kgF and 4kgR come out of it (low king springs)... and due to Fortune Auto having the right valving, and thier very impressive 'digressive technology' the car drives like magic... it is not anywhere near as bumpy or rough as the softer springs... the valving in the shocks is spot on, and soaks up all the little inconcistancies.. you don't even know your driving a car with coilovers!
