Default AE102 corolla diagnostic how to?

    Hi there,

I don't have any available repair manuals at the moment and the engine light has been on the car (I believe it's an engine light? It looks more like a gearbox to me but anyhoo), could anybody run through with me how I would be able to get the fault codes with the car? Is there are DIY way or do I need some sort of equipment?

I'd go out and buy the Gregory's it's just that I need to get this problem fixed this weekend for work.

It still runs normally so I'm hoping it's just the o2 sensor or something that's gone... could any point me in the right direction?

I have a lot of tools available besides fancy equipment, it's just that when it comes to electricals I get sort of confused.

    Much appreciated.

PS. I've tried doing a search but to no avail. If anyone can point me to any useful links then that'd be appreciated!

To get the fault codes you turn the car off, pop the bonnet and find the diagnostics terminal in the engine-bay - it'll be a little black box about the size of a box of playing cards, near the passenger-side strut tower, with the words DIAG printed on the top. Pop it open and use a paperclip to bridge the TE1 and E1 terminals (there is a pin layout diagram under the cap). This locks the ignition advance (for setting timing) and puts the ECU into diagnostics mode, which will then display fault codes through the CEL (check engine light) once you start the engine. Normal operation is indicated by a steady single flash every half second or so, if something is wrong you'll get a two-digit code flash up - short burst of flashes representing the first digit, then a small pause, then a second burst of flashes for the second digit, then a longer pause, and then it either repeats (if you only have one code stores) or moves onto the next code if you have multiple problems.

Standard codes are as follows (or similar, I'll post up the actual 7AFE ones from the Gregorys when I get home from work):
11 - Loss of power supply to ECU

14 - Ignition. No IGF signal to ECU for 4 consecutive IGT signal during engine running
    - Open/short in IGF/IGT signal from igniter to ECU
    - Igniter malfunction
    - ECU

    - Vacuum sensor
    - ECU

22 - H2O temperature sensor. No signal at THW

    Hey guys,

I've done the dianostic and it appears that's it flashing 21. If Hiro's post on signals is relevant to AE102's, then I was right! It's the o2 sensor.

Could someone please confirm for me?

Yep, 21 is O2 sensor for the 7As according to the manual.

    Okay cool!

I'll have a friend get a second hand one for me at his work place!

    Thanks a lot guys.

Didn't expect to get a timely response from the forums.

    Thanks again!

The procedure for the test was so easy!

Testing the O2 sensor is easy, worth doing to the new sensor before you install it (and maybe the old one to make sure it's not the wiring that's the problem etc).

    http://mr2.com/TEXT/O2_Sensor.html

Look at the section 'Testing O2 sensors on the workbench.' right down the bottom of the page.
