2 or 3 seconds is a pretty long time, you sure thats not a bit of an exaggeration ?

1.5 sec or less sounds more like it.

its normal man. i wouldnt worry bout it.

Yep about 2 or 3 seconds most of the time.

How is it possible for an Anti-drainback valve to fail? debris getting stuck on it and sticking it open?

It's just basically a rubber flap (it's the rubber you see through the small holes around the big hole in the middle), I guess with age and hot oil going through it the rubber would harden and not spring back to close off the holes effectively.

    Thanks TC,

Today took it for a drive, came back. then started it 30 minutes later to go somewhere else, had the low oil pressure light plus the valve train noise, so it's not only just when cold.

Might aswell change the filter anyway since it's time for an oil change.

Probably find the grinding noise is the slop in the timing chain/oil tensioner chain taking up and thats why you have a couple of seconds before light goes out as well as there is too much slack in chain....so its probably worn chain / stretched....

    I don't have a timing chain, I have a timing belt.

Just checked with Ryco, the filter does have a anti-drainback valve.
If it were the timing belt grinding i'd assume it would do it all the time, I only get the noise
    every 3rd start or so.

    Hi,

Got around to changing the oil and filter today. Used a Fleetgaurd filter this time, still get the loud valvetrain noise on startup. The anti-drainback seal on the old filter looked fine.

Valvetrains don't grind, they tap, and that will only be those that are out out of spec or a few hydraulic lifters that drain down from sludge/smegma in their valving.

Maybe the engine is just about rooted...
3 seconds is a fairly long time to get pressure up...
How many miles does it have on it?

    Odometer shows 66,000km.
It sounds like a truck just after startup coming from the head.

I was thinking if the engine is rooted, wouldn't oil pressure be down when driving not just startup?
Can it be a problem with the oil pump causing this?

Have you tried a genuine oil filter?
I have seen them get rid of this problem sometimes.

Was going to say that to,

from one suspect unknown quality brand of filter to another.

For the price of a genuine filter it's a cheap way to tell if that is the problem.
