Thumbs up RWD 1MZFE Has anyone actually done it?

    Hi Toymodders

I am cutting and welding my ke70 engine bay ready for paint blacktop 4age and other awesomeness. I had just been researching the sw20/1mz swap before i got a sensible DO NOT TOUCH daily. At this point my brain put two and two together and i started searching for 1mz in rwd format. Problem is i couldn't find any info except giant tomato off these forums was looking into it.

Has anyone actually done the conversion that would like to share some info?

Seeing as the sw20 people bolt them up to s series gearboxes is it possable to use a 2s-W5x or altezza 6 speed? looking at pictures there is a lack of space for a starter motor as i assume the fwd would have the starter going the opposite way. Other than that there are plenty of holes to facilitate mounts on the side of the block and the water looks like its in all the right places.

So why hasnt anyone done this yet? Feel free to enlighten me!

    cheers

    Daniel.

    Hi Daniel
I was going down this path mate and had the engine and gearbox all bolted up using a 2S bellhousing and W55 box. The starter motor setup needed some attention, because it would need to mount on the gearbox side of the bellhousing, requiring the bellhousing to be machined down.

Sump was going to be fine as long as you went with a rear type cross member.
I was very keen on the conversion but went cold because I could do the 1UZ conversion at less expense and the 1UZ is a proven engine with boost.

I have some photos in my members ride thread I think

so cutting the firewall is unavoidable? Did you consider the idea of a compact style starter motor or is there simply no room?

You just Dremel out the large chunk of redundant webbing in the block, use an adaptor ring and 3VZE starter and flywheel if you want to avoid chopping the firewall.

3vze is the hilux motor hence flywheel & starter will work much easier due to north south engine mounting. Not to get mixed up with the 3vzfe which is the Camry/ES300 motor east west mounting. Gianttomatoes adapter plate is by far the easiest way around adapting to rear will drive. VZ motor, MZ motor, & GR motor series have the same config for flywheel in front wheel drive. (Even though most of these motors its rare to see in a manual guise, as most are auto) Only thing i'm not sure on is if the 3vze flywheel is different, due to engine/gearbox mounting and gearbox bellhousing size. Not sure on tooth size and also how it engages the flywheel and front what position. Not sure been a long day today, gianttomato might be able to clarify

Looks like a bloke in Perth is doing an AE86 at the moment and plans to sell the bellhousings as a kit type thing from what I can gather here.

I'm toying around with the idea of this conversion myself as I don't mind driving the mrs' Vienta but it has too much weight, my little van would be a much more suited home for a 1MZ.

Mwahaha... That's my thead... Yes, it's happening... and very very soon... we'll also be casting the bellhousings should our prototype prove effective. The donor car is being rolled into the shed tomorrow evening, so watch this space for progress... I'll be sure to post info here as it happens.

Having had a 1MZ for test fitting here for a few months, we've been able to nut out a lot of the major issues, and I can happily state the likely reason it hasn't been done, is that it's a bit of a head-fark.

Starter motor placement, clutches, flywheels, water lines, mounts... it's a rather technical conversion, but I am 100% certain that it will be successful (and rediculously fun to drive).

Sounds like a walk in the park for someone like Joel who's converted 3S to RWD... At least there's no fucking around with the sump, or water housings, and the inlet manifold can be cut 'n' shut to suit from my inspections.

Are you interested in sharing information regarding what you are doing? Or is it more of a business/sell-able package you are developing?

I am mainly interested in the removing of block webbing for starter motor..

    Cheers

I'm interested in a complete bellhousing/flywheel/clutch combo package.

What are you looking at doing for the inlet as AE86 would be fairly similar to a TA22 which works for me.

    Cheers

I'm going with a GT adapter plate/ring, R series bellhousing, 3vze rwd flywheel & starter.

    Interesting.

    I've got a 2S RWD bellhousing
    W58 Gearbox

I would love one of GT's adaptor rings but i did not think he was going them any more?

My understanding is 2s bolts up ok, but going to put the starter in not a nice spot regarding the block webbing and required removal.

GT has been kind enough to assist with an adapter ring for the 3vzfe that I am useing to test the setup and modify where required.. So i'll keep you posted on how that goes.
