Default New Turbos On Car - Do I Need To Build Oil Pressure?

    hellooo good people of toymods

well the 1ggte ke70 is home from the exhuast shop and i am very close to starting it. just a couple of things left to do.
now i am wondering, when i bought the car the turbos were not on the car and have bought and put stock turbos onto the engine
will be putting the banjo bolts into the oil feeds tomorrow and am wondering do i need to crank the engine over without the turbos spinning so that the oil has time to flow thru the turbos to the bearings?
or will it be just fine by starting and letting it tick over?
if i do need to build oil pressure whats the best way to do it? remove spark plugs and crank over for a minute or two?
cheers guys, i should be started tomorrow

always a good idea to allow oil to get around before first start of anything...

i don't know how long you would need to crank... long enough for oil to come back from the drain....

alternatively, you could get a disliked relative to hold the turbines still while you start the car

or..if you had a big arsed syringe (50ml?100ml?) from a chemist, you could squirt oil into the feed (jam it up against the fitting to seal) before hooking up the banjo, and that will prolly be ok if you keep it at idle till you build up oil pressure...

    maybe....

    maybe....

    gotta love that word

i think its safest to crank it for a goodly while with the plugs out as all disliked relatives are over the border and theyre too dumb to understand what i want them to do anyway lol.

what i might do is crank engine with plugs out (plugs out so air doesnt go thru the turbos) and banjo fittings out. when it starts to urinate all over the place ill put the banjos in and crank for a little longer so i know the oil has flowed around everywhere like i want. then i wont have another thing to fix once the car is started

    what are peoples thoughts?

erm, if you have the plugs out, it will spray petrol:air mix around you realise...

you aren't going to do any damage to the turbo's at cranking speed, there's no load on them, but i agree there's good reason to crank it over and get oil all around the place first, but pull the fuel pump fuse (and wait for the pressure to dissipate) and then crank it till the oil light goes out, and then a bit more.. once there is oil pressure, that should pretty much mean all the air is out of the system, and the oil is at the bearings (turbo ones), so giving it a little bit longer should be fine..

i wouldn't leave the drains off and crank it, it will get messy really quick, and you will have a bastard of a time getting the surfaces clean again.

    And,

Think about it, If you leave those banjo fittings OFF to get oil pressure to the head, by the time you get out, fit them on and get back in the car to turn the motor over again, what oil pressure there WAS at the head, will be well and truely gone by the time you fit the banjo fittings on..

Seriously, just bolt the whole thing together and start it but don't apply any load.. Hell, if you haven't started the motor in a while, it'll probably take a while to fire, by which time the turbos will have oil anyway.

Just pull the EFI fuse and crank it with the spark plugs out. That'll get it quicksmart and it won't be under any load.

    Frank knows the score.
Usually, after a short while the oil light will even go out. That signals that everything should be lubed.

not with lpg, with the stop tap closed

when i was dong compression testing on the engine i did 3 runs n each cylinder. abot 20 seconds minimum a test and i didnt get any oil out :O
thats why im worried about them going oil free for a loong time

now going to sort some things and ill give a progress update in a few hours

And that's why Frank said to remove the EFI fuse.

Cool Re: New Turbos On Car - Do I Need To Build Oil Pressure?

Disable the ignition, turn it over 5-10 seconds. Good to go.

I was surprised how long it too for oil to start coming out the HP feed to the turbos in my 1JZ when I was priming it... (Cranking with EFI fuse pulled).

It took about 1mins at least at a guess. It was much longer than 5-10 secs. The oil light was off before oil started coming out the feeds to the turbos too...

I'd take an oil drain hose off one of the turbos and crank it till you see oil coming out

    Cheers

yeah pull the efi fuse and plugs then crank until you get oil pressure.

this not only will lube up the turbos but everything else.

sure beats firing it into life with dry bearings.

my 4a when we did the exact same thing after building it took a good min of cranking before getting pressure. think when you fire herup it takes what 5-10sec to get oil pressure... and then the thing is spinnigmuch faster then what you will get by just cranking it and not having it fire.
