Nice work, and quick reply !!!

I bought myself an MR2 a few weeks ago, (NA model ) and if you go searching for the SOS from Bombala thread, you can see the adventure I had with it. It's currently not registered, so I'm thinking an engine swap sooner rather than later would be good.

Got a couple other cars to fix before I can pay around with my toy though, will watch this thread with interest to see the rights and wrongs about swapping this engine.

EDIT : Checking the link now.

EDIT 2 : Requires registration, off to do that now.

yeah, sorry about the registration required. also, most of the updates are posted on MR2OC.com first. you may want to keep an eye out over there.

the only issue right now is the inability to remove all ECU codes that light the check engine light. but none cause the ECU to go into Limp mode.

Yeah, having read that swap that Paul Woods did for the bloke in Norway, he just done up a bypass to get it passed by Germany's equivalant of a rego check ( I assume it was for that, or engineering ).

Apparently the guy is going to move to an aftermarket ecu so he wasn't going to be too fussed by it, Paul did say otherwise they would have worked on it some more.

yeah, that was a result of a conversation with me. the emissions evaporation system would be hard to work around, but that system isn't in the australian ECUs anyways.

the bigger problem is the transmission input RPM would not be very easy to fake. if you keep the ECU happy by making it beleive that it isn't moving, that won't let you complete the test "trips" and if you make the ECU happy by providing all the transmission signals, it'll probably occasionally lift the throttle to shift the transmission at inappropriate times.

once the Lotus evora ECU is released this will become significantly easier since all the auto tranny codes will disapear. all that will remain will be the emissions stuff and all that can be installed or worked around.

I'm surprised Lotus would be keeping the emissions stuff, unless they are making it compliable with Califiornia laws ?

It seems interesting that the bottom of the block looks quite upright, certainly compared to a 1MZ.
May even be room for a 4wd transmission to fit up there without modification.

California is a HUGE market for this car. they'd be silly to release it in a non 50-state emissions legal format.

also, Toyota already did all the work, so there's no need to spend money making it 50-state legal.

a 4wd box definitely fits there. they have a few models in the US with that motor in a 4wd/awd configuration. the venza and the rav4 both have it.

it uses the classic celica all-trac configuration.

How would the driveshaft up to the front fit though ?

Re Emissions : Yeah I can see that, I just thought Lotus would do away with something that would potentially be a bit of a restriction on power. There again, Lotus is known for building cars that weigh 9/10ths of SFA, and therefore don't need raging big powerplants.

Digging up an old thread seeing as my 3S-GTE has busted itself.

GT4 manual box doesn't fit onto this engine. It seems that the GT4 have a larger transfer case than the Rav4/Kluger/Lexus RX3##.

Seeing as this engine has 206kW, it should be expected that the transfer case on that auto should handle the grunt. Need to figure out if its swap-able with the GT4 transfer case maybe.

someone has fit a modern rav-4 transfer case to an E153 transmission. i don't remember the exact details or even where the thread was called, but it was on twobrutal somewhere and has the info you need. it has been done.
