Default Head gasket for a 2L diesel

Apologies if this is the wrong section for this post.

I recently bought a 1984 diesel hilux with a turbo 2L diesel, it has a blown head gasket (yes I knew that when I bought it). Now I can get a head gasket for around $80, however would it be worth trying to get a copper head gasket for it? if so where would I purchase one?

Yes I have googled long and hard, but am unable to find anything specific.

Also I read that the 2L and the 2LT headgaskets are slightly different, how do I identify if I have a 2L or a 2LT, as it is not the original engine from the car.

Any other suggestions for things I should take a look at or renew while the head is off? I am all ears. Never replaced a head gasket on a diesel before, am hopping it is relatively straight forward.

    Thanks for the help

    Justin.

toyotasurf.asn.au has lots of useful information about the 2l and 2lt's.

Thanks for the tip, I did find that site in my searching, unfortunately their search function is crappy and after 45 mins of reading numerous irrelevant posts, I gave up

mate, im no expert at diesels or doing headgaskets but id suggest doing all the valve guides on a diesel that old, possibly new head studs if you can find them, and a good clean up of the head itself, going thru everything that opens and shuts..

then u can enjoy driving it, in the places it was designed to go, a million miles from anywhere..without worrying if you are gonna need to work on that part of the engine anytime again soon..

    happy 4wding..

Dust: have a chat or PM to Esteban (Lance) as he's tripped over the differences between NA and Turbo L-series diesels recently.

mate , don,t use a copper hg unless you o,ring the block or head .clean her up nice and use a std hg and replacing the guides is a must as they wear like buggery . but if you need copper hg for anything google ridgecrest in melbourne ,they make them for most engines. cheers bigwad
