Default 1J R32 worked out pretty neat

I bumped into this site while on a search for info to complete this swap, so here are the results of my efforts and the help I received here.

The car is my drift beaten 1992 R32 gtst. I have halfassedly attemted to do semi pro drifty events with it for a while now but couldnt place any higher than 5th or so because I had always managed to grenade a trans before the final round and RB20s do not fair so well in 4th gear on 2nd and 3rd gear tracks (3rd always blew).

The engine is a 1j vvti from a jzx100 and the trans is a 89 or so supra trans (r154) with a 1j bell on it. Besides the pipe work we did, the exhaust, and a walbro pump, it is completely standard....even the clutch.

The car is what it is, a beaten drift car with the usual stuff, cusco coils, all the multilink mess, welded diff, cage, nothing fancy.

Well, on to the pics and the vid someone took of the entire event. It was a very fun day and the car performed FLAWLESSLY. Very few people in the US drift community pay the 1J any attention, but alot of heads were turned when this stock 1J powered heap did the entire course (usually all 2nd gear) in 3rd! It seems to be the perfect match for the R32 with so much potential yet to be tapped....and OH SO CHEAP to boot!
VID!

very nice
the vvti 1j is one hellova a piece of work for a 2.5, and in the lightweight R32 it would be a bucketload of fun.

Some more details on suspension, engine mods, power graphs etc would be great

Arrrr!!! Is the vid working for anyone else? EDIT: Thankyou "chuckster!!!"

The vid is amazing and there is like 5 people in it that I am directly associated with...as in room mates and friends at the shop we borrow...darnit. LOL.

Ps. The specs on the engine are Home made intercooler/home made exhaust/walbro fuel pump/ and NOTHING ELSE. Seriously.

Car weighs in at 3000lbs without me in it but with 1/4 tank of gas.

Car has nothing special done..

Coilovers are cusco zero2r.

All multilink stuff is e-bay junk.

angle mods are ground down stops and angle spacers.

Rear end is stock S13 diff welded up.

Cage is 8 point that we buzzed together.

Seat is sparco evo

Harness is some simpson thing that passes tech...hehe.

Brakes are stock

Kit is $300 fake uras

wheel is some beat up sparco thing

Car was originally an auto and I used LHD S13 pedal and master cyl with a little modding to make it 5spd.

wheels are 18x9 -7 and 18x10 -0 work meister s1rs.

Tires vary but fronts are 225-40-18 Falken FK452 and rear is whatever I can afford (usually 245-40-17 or 255-35-18).

Paint is stock, fenders rolled, kit spray canned.

Drive shaft is the only thing not done by myself and friends. It was about $200 locally to have it peiced together.

EDIT again with more info.... Mounts were made from a jig my friend had for S13 1J swap. I swapped the R32 crossmember for an S13 one (bolts up) and then used the S13 1J mounts.....fits so nice and uses S13 motor mounts. For rear cross member, we used the R32 crossmember sides and some angle to mount it up with the R154 rubber mount. Wiring was where yall helped out tons! I found all of the pinouts I used to get the stock ecu to work perfectly right here. The gauges run off the same resistance as R32 ones so everything is accurate. I am working on making the speedometer cable drive work (both are cable driven so not a big task). The only tuff part is getting the exhaust to clear the steer shaft, but it was only a 2hr or so fix... S chassis with 1J should be GREAT FUN... more should do it.

Haha, yes! I am on Ziptied as well as most of the guys in the vid. I am not part of those fellows with the "comrades" stickers though. I did meet one or two of those fellows at this event! This event was an east coast "bash" and those fellows are mostly west coast....however, several guys made the trip clear across country.

Ps. ZT username= Swapinthedark aswell.

EDIT... Wait a min. I recognize the car in your sig... You have the car that just got vinyl wrapped over on ZT? Am I wrong? I almost vinyled my last car. If I smash this one, I may vinyl the whole car too, but as long as a spray can can save it, I'm stayin' with it....vinyl aint quite as cheap as rattle cans, LOL.

3000lbs?
jeez, more than I would ahve expected.

She performs well for such a porker (mine is fatter, but I thought the R32s were more along the lines of silvia weight)

Yeah, she is a bit fat. I have the sound deadening out, but the carpet is back in and the cage dosnt help the situation any, The ABS motor is still in place (but disabled), the stereo and heat are all still there, etc. I want her to loose 150lbs before next season, but it will be quite tough.

Plans include:

remove ABS motor 20ish lbs with all the crap attached.

remove front speakers and all amps (just run rear speakers off of head unit)

Swap hood for D-max FRP one.

Finish skinning trunk and attach with pins.

MAYBE snag a spare pair of doors and gut them down to latches/skin/and hinges (doors are freaking heavy)...then use them for events and reinstall fatory doors for cruising around. (It is still my daily afterall).

Hopefully I will lose nearly 100lbs from the doors alone.

I should probably remove that 20lb hunk of rice I call a wing, but I love it so.

how's the rear trim etc looking?

mine's a few hundred lbs more than yours, but the JZA80 is a hefty bitch (but I love her so)

Hows the rear trim looking? ..as in did I remove it? or cut it to fit the cage? or how much weight was it? I'm confused. The rear plastic interior trim is still in, but the seats and all are gone. The trim weighs less than a pound a peice and theres only like 4 peices, so I left em in to keep it looking .....clean, I guess. I need big ole chunks of weight gone, LOL. I will nitpick later.

My room mate's daily driven S13 has lexan back glass that we made/installed ourselves for about $60, so I may remove the rear window and qtr windows and give that a go aswell(maybe worth 30lbs or so?)...My only regret is that the weight will be leaving the very end I neeeed weight on.

I paid $1800 for the whole setup... engine/trans/bellhousing/stock clutch/harness/ecu.

The I/C piping was tigged up out of spare stuff and an SR FMIC kit. The intercooler is a greddy core that we welded some random ebay tanks to.

The exhaust is Buddy club spec2 for R32 and a downpipe for a regular 1j that we used the flange and rearanged the piping from.

Thanks for the kind words.

Wish me luck, I will be entering US Drift round4 at Summit Point WV this weekend! The entry is a semi banked 4th gear e-brake slibe into a decreasing radius 2nd gear switchup..... I might just die... LOL.

Thanks for the weekend well wishing.

The going rate for a non vvti motor set similar to mine is about $1800 here, but my exact swap(motor, trans, ecu, harness, maf, etc) usually goes for $2600 to $3500 dpending. I got a hook up cause a buddy had it chilling and just wanted to see something neat done with the motor.

Nah, but a place here on the east coast CLAIMS to have auto JZX100 swaps for $1500...

We have one guy who usually films our smaller events, but this will be a combo event where we (the US Drift series guys) and the usual small event guys run on the same courses all day and then the big event goes through eleminations with media looking on while the "joes" type class does their comp on the back course (the more fun course actually). I am trying to work something out where I can enter both comps caue there is no $$$ prize for the "joes" class and there would be no loss to the others if a USdrift driver placed high in the class. ....I just want more track time!!! LOL.

^ Long story short, YES there will be plenty video. Check back on monday!
