    Default Toyota performance diesel???

Are there any recent Toyota diesel motors 1.8L to 2.4L DOHC? If so, doing the same upgrades as on a petrol motor (i.e. bottom end, cams, turbo, computer, head work) would the diesel motor put out decent reliable numbers?

(Keep in mind the diesel engine would be diesel/LPG fueled , due to diesel only burning 80% of the fuel but when mixed with LPG its able to burn 100% because of the higher octane of the LPG)

not recent .. but some older 4WD and sedans are around 1.8 to 2.4.... thinking old hilux, JDM cressida / crown / cresta / vista variants..

they are old and clunky at this day and age though.. doubt there'd be any performance value on them

lx90 had the 2.4 2L-T motor, diesel and turbo'd. Had head problems and wasnt a good performer in the heavy cars it was put into, ie surfs and the like.

the L series diesel motors are anything but perfromance motors. performance yes as in they drag though mud well but other then that... no.

credit where credit's due the current crop of turbo diesel 3litre motors in the hilux (twin cam 4valve turbo) hook along pretty well. but still not really a performance motor

How high can you wind out a diesel out to CR wise? With forced induction before things go wrong?

I'm assuming you mean compression ratio, it will depend on the engines design. for instance a stock normally aspirated 2.4 diesel (the second slowest engine ever made) has a compression ratio of around 22 to 1, when the factory put a turbo on this engine they did a few mods to enable the engine to handle the extra heat produced.(more air and fuel being burnt equals more heat the engine has to get rid off.) They placed oil squirters at the bottom of each cylinder that squirts a jet of oil on the underside of the piston, this is to remove excess heat, as you probably know the pistons can only get so hot before they lose a lot of their strength. They also put in a larger oil pump as not only do the piston jets take oil pressure out of the oiling system, the turbo also needs a supply of oil. There are also other factors to consider, like changes made to the injection pumps calibration, injector tweaks, and god knows what else. I do know a guy who turboed his normally aspirated 5L (thats the 3 litre toyota diesel) it was fine at the 6 or 7 pounds of boost, but he got greedy and turned up the boost to 14 or so pounds, which melted a hole in one of the pistons. These motors are not really performance engines, you have to spend a lot of money to get decent horsepower out of a diesel. First off, get something that runs a computer and a common rail injection system, (a 4.2litre would be a good size to start with) , add an aftermarket blower $5000 to 7000., an upgraded computer chip (probably $1500) add an intercooler ($1000 to 2000 fitted), an upgraded exhaust system($1000 to 2000), performance clutch kit, bigger radiator, and don't forget the hours of dynotuning to make the most of these mods. Don't forget that you are going to lose a lot of your diesel economy with these mods (your going to use the power arn't you?) I don't mean to put you off, if you have the cash go for it, but i'm sure that their are easier (and cheaper) ways to make lots of power.(like a petrol motor!) If your povo, and have to settle for a 2.4 L.T. (turbo) get the earlier engine as the 2L.T.E (computerised version) cracks heads like you wouldnt believe. What is the intended use of the vehicle anyway?

The 1KD-FTE in the new Hilux's, Hiace's and Prado's are pretty punchy. And all those weigh a fair bit. 3 Litre putting out 127kW. Miles more responsive and powerful than the old 1KZ and the L motors.

    Would cost a packet though.

We had a new model hilux come in with a upgraded exhaust *3in* and one of those LPG systems. Came in for rough running and so later to be discovered, the LPG kit was just a little to much for teh common rail and lost number one piston. 28,000k on the clock too. $15,000 saw a new motor.

    Food for thought i guess

On the side note though. Have seen some pretty wild BT50's here. Up'd chip, exhaust, and new front mount chiller. Bulk torque! Though as for reliablity goes, i'm unsure.

    Cheers
    Simon

Yeah, premote better fuel burning, cooler intake tempts etc. Though the added stress of it all was too much in the end anyways. Been told of this method before, and it was mainly used on large motors.
