good method, easier than the way ive done it, mostly cause i didnt have a special tool

shinybluesteel, why would you take the head off when this method saves you a decent amount of money on a VRS, head bolts etc not to mention time? ill also be doing this eventually, i have needed valve stem seals for years but am way too lazy, and dont want to waste a good HKS head gasket taking the head off.

also ill just add, another way to keep the valves in the head is to put compressed air in the cylinder, but not everyone has a compresor i spose.

    Awesome... +reps

These write ups are invaluable and worth the effort - well done.

We just did the same job on my son's AE86 4AGE, but we sent the head to the local engine shop to do the seals for about $50.00. Figured this was cheaper than looking for a suitable tool. Have to get one of those tools though, to do my 4AGE when it needs it.

(As it turned out, some of the valves were leaking slightly, so we ended up with a full head job - $400 - so it was the right thing to do sending it to the shop).
Don't force it... use a larger hammer.
If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

    Great write-up!
    Try www.toyotool.com
See my post in the '1jzgte valve stem seals' thread

Cost about $100US delivered, and the tool is also made to install the seals (no need for 11mm socket)

Thanks to Ribfeast for the link.
    Cheers

Fortunately I have that snap-on available, cost me 32.95 USD shipped, and the 11mm fits perfect and is EASY. Well worth it to me.

I would recommending finding a snap-on rep and seeing if he can get some for you guys down there given how much cheaper they are than the 'toyotool'.

    Group buy maybe???

I'd be keen to get one.

I've been waiting on a machine shop for over a month to do my head, I think I'll save some money, get it back and do it my self after reading this.

    +rep

    Ditto.

Worse comes to worst... Someone reputable here in the states could alwasy order them for you and you pay the shipping. I just don't have the time at the moment or I'd be willing to do it.

The Americans have both on their website. I'd spend the $90 if I knew that the more expensive one would do both...

Yeah - I've seen the Lisle one myself, just can't find any information on weather it will do 6mm valves...
