Default How to identify my 4agze?

Hey all, I've not long picked up an old rolla wagon with a 4agze that has been changed to
4agte. The rings are stuffed and it's in pieces waiting to be rebuilt, but as it has been modified i'm not 100% sure of it's origins as the early and late models have a different piston and i don't want to end up with the wrong ones.

I've been searching for a while for some answers but all I can get is, The colour of the cam covers? or MAP or AFM which is no help to me because it has after market management that runs of a built in MAP sensor?

The colour of the cam covers is to sketchy in my opinion. All I know is that it's a 7 rib block, The con rods have the oil squirters? I think that's what they are, Big port head, Black cam covers and the engine No# is 4A1041627

Your help is very much appreciated
    Cheers Harvo

    sounds like a ae92/3.or ae101 block.
i had a page on it which identified them, see if i can dig it up.
that page identifies the 3 series of the motor, ie, oil squirter, so it must be one of thr last two series of motor.

Hey thanks for the fast reply I forget to mention it has a distributor type ignition which leans me more towards the AW11 unless it's a different head? Would anyone have pics and specs of the 2 different pistons? are there any major differences between them?

if its a Dizzy type, then its probably the 1st series motor,
dont have pics, but the difference would be semi forged and completely forged.
prob a late model 1st series.

The easiest way to check is to look for an oil feed pipe at the back of the head. If there is a pipe leading from under no 4 inlet down to the block, it's a smallport head.

Bear in mind that the accessories like distributors can be changed easily if you're using a non factory ECU..

Well there's no oil line down to the block from the head/inlet. This is what the intake ports look like:

I striped the black paint off of the cam covers and there was blue paint on the letters, I assume this is the original colour so I'll look in to it some more.

What year where the oil squirters introduced? anyone?

    Thanks for your time guys

you say the engine is in peices and you want new rings for the rebuild?

if so measure the top (1st) ring groove, 1.5mm is a bigport 4agze piston which uses ACL # C1741.(STD or oversize 0.50 - 1.00). 1.2mm is the smallport 4agze piston that uses ACL # C1806 (STD etc....).

plus no 4agze came stock with blue writing on the inlet cam cover, only the early 3 rib 4age.

Yeah man it's in pieces, but I need new pistons not just rings. I think it may be a hybrid motor with mixed and matched bit from different engines, the covers were all black, but when i paint striped them the letters were blue and the covers possibly silver? It's definitely a 7 rib block and has the oil squirters.

That looks like a smallport head, are you sure there isn't an oil drain there?

If you need new pistons, just get the late ZE ones they will fit in any 4AG (except the very early NAs). I suppose if I'd actually read your first post, I could have said that in the beginning....

come to think of it there is an oil drain behind the intake manifold, when i read your other post that said under the no4 intake i thought you meant the actual intake manifold. I've just been going off what the bloke I got it off told me. The block and head are down at the machine shop so I'm going off my memory here . There is a drain from sort of under the head at the back of the intake manifold that runs in a pipe that goes in to the sump which looks a bit rough to me mabe a home made job. Should it drain into the block or the sump with the factory set up?
