    Default 20v 4age questions

    hey guys

i generally dont like starting tech threads cos chances somone has answered it else where

i went down to beenleigh bearings yesterday and talked to them bout a rebuild kit for a 20v, the following things came up, there is no head gasket available separate of a valve regrind kit, and there doesnt appear to be any rings specifically for a 20v.

    now the questions

    1. WTF is a valve regrind kit?
    2. because all the 4a blocks are the same(excepting oil squirters) could i use a 16v HG on the 20v?
    3. i would assume same bore = same rings, is this the case or do they change cos of the different compression height of the 20v pissers?

    thanks

    luke

i've used a 16v HG on a 20v rebuild, there are minor difference between the 2 gaskets though, by memory small coolant hole differences. though i saw no harm in this.

a VRS is normaly every gasket from the head gasket up. if they sell you a VRS for a 16v, it'll be no good for a 20v, different cam cover gasket required etc.

the rings you will need to measure the ring gaps on the pistons, if the 1st one (top) is 1.2mm, 2nd 1.5mm, and the oil scrapers 2.8mm then you use the same rings as a smallport 4age piston which in ACL is part number C1806.STD (STD for standard bore, not oversized).
if however the top ring gap is 1.5mm, then the C1741.STD ring kit is required (same as a bigport piston).

    have fun with the rebuild.

p.s. i buy 0.8mm gasket paper and make my own oil pump, rear main seal cover etc. gaskets, and seals needed seperately. it saves a lot of cash on gasket kits!

As feral4mr2 said, A Valve Regrind Set is all the gaskets from the HG up. ACL do a full rebuild kit (for a 16v definitely but Im fairly sure they do 20v as well) but it has to be put together as they need bearing specs etc. meaning that they cant organise it for you until you have pulled your engine down which is a PITA. That is, unless you know what size bearings you need.

by rights it should be same bearings as a 7 rib bigport and the smallport (mains 5M1695 and conrod 4B1780), same front seal (NJ349) and rear crank (NJ001) seals and by memory same cam seals (NJ353).

disclaimer, please check my part numbers as it's been a while.

Repco sell it but you would have to ask for it. Not to sure about Supercheap.

yea they normaly keep it out the back in small square cuts or a big roll to buy by the meter.

though i wouldnt bother asking at supercrap, they most probably wouldnt know what it is.

Yes you can use Smallport AE92 16V Rings (1.2/1.5/2.8) ACL Part Nos are: C1806 (standard) or PS1806 (Proseal)

Main and Rod Bearings are also the same a AE92 small port. ACL also have a RACE range.
Mains: 5M1695 (5M1695H for race series)
Rods: 4B1780 (4B1780H for race series)
    Thrust: 2T1695

When rebuilding a 20V head, the valve stem seals are the hard bit to get afaik you can only get genuine ones in Australia (awaits rebuttal....)

For headgaskets, the 20V HG water channels are different to the 16V one. Sone have suggested a 7AFE is suitable, but I'd just buy a genuine one from Toyota, or as I did, buy a TRD one. I picked mine up for $100.

Have a look at this thread about 20V headgaskets:

thanks guys! = rep for all (even those discussing gasket paper)

i shall go and talk to the lovely folk at toyota when i get a chance.

re valve stem seals, i have heard that they are exactly the same as 16v ones (3s and 1g as well), is this the case?

    thanks again guys

For the intake manifold gasket, I have used Weet-Bix packet and some Permatex No.3 or No.4. I get bagged out for this, but it works.

    For everything else SILICONE!!!!!

bearing part number is the same, but with .25, .50, .75 after it instead of .STD. all depends on what size over you are after.
