    Great thread guys.

If one was to embark on a minimal, bare-shell up rebuild of a car, what circuits are deemed to be essential to pass RWC and rego? A list would be greatly appreciated (eg headlights/rear lights, brake lights, indicator circuit etc). The car in question will necessarily be EFI.

Garth you should mention that your planning to re-shell. I'd be interested if thats a factor in having a pro do it cheaper? I imagine it would be. Have 1 shell sitting there with all parts/engine in with no actual wiring and then the previous shell there with old wirring sitting besides it for any refference

Id also be interested in auto-electircal suppliers. I was after some 40amp cable and I eventually had to go into a garage and have a guy sell me some from his own supply they used on cars in the workshop.. Had to do the same thing for certain female/male connectors.

when you get right down to it....
pick up a manual for something like an old corolla.. the systems they have are the bare necessities, and then you ad your EFI support systems on top.

basically.. anything electrical in the car needs wiring and there is more to it than you think..
i did a from scratch design for my rolla when the EFI went in, as it had no relays and not many fuses, but i do not have it with me....

it is VERY good to be able to route wiring where it should go, and terminate said wires in ensible places, as opposed to factory looms (which still work tho)

sit down with large shet of paper, draw where your electrical items are, then location of relay/fuse boxes.. and then start joining wires

IMHO the best thing about rewiring your car is that you can get rid of all those stupid little fuseboxes and relay boxes which arnt applicable for the variant which you have. For example all the little emissions bits for the US, and all the RHD bits etc.

Do it, it'll be right up there with the most rewarding thing you do. Oh, and when you finish it off, don't use cheap electrical tape

There really is bugger-all, and when you piss off the rear wiper and demister wiring as well like I have, there's the tail light loom and that's about it. Covered in 13mm black conduit and fed inside the rear quarter panel, it all becomes very neat, very fast.

so keep it.. its only 1 wire..

all i have running down to the back is:

    1. brake
    2. lights
    3. reverse
    4. indicate left
    5. indicate right
    6. fuel level reader
    7. rear window defrost

that's it. all fits in a narva 8-pin plug connection at the front and is really neat.

But the rest of the car isnt the problem with re-wiring a car =p

Besides everything mentioned, you then also have

    - left and right door lights (go to little swiches)
    - roof light
    - handbrake down/up

thats all the body on a hachi involves. The problem is under the dash and driver side kick panel. Sorting that out is a pain. And ofcourse the front end loom.

meh.. throw out the door sensors and interior light... and don't drive with the handbrake on.. simple

maybe the handbrake light is a requirement of a roadworthy, but afaik interior lights arent. you could make the body a lot more involved than it *needs* to be.. just introduce some in-car entertainment wiring.

but yes youre absolutely right, the bigger mess is in all the switches and relays and such under the dash. still.. simple enough in an old fashioned computerless car.

u might as well fit everything in
if u leave any small things out now then it just makes it harder to add them later

door switches might not be needed but its not much extra to add

plus u can fit yr own ligths under dash or anywhere else even a nice new style interior light with map lights

but with roadworthyness if something had it from factory then its not there it just gives the cops or whoever another reason to windge about it and maybe defect

they do make their own rules sometimes

I agree with Jim on that one - you might as well leave things like the door sensors in etc, plus the deletion of the interior light will shit you to tears in certain circumstances.
