Default Supercharged lameness... AKA 4AZGE into TA22

    Welcome all,

    Let Rex first begin with a letter sent to Him by a young man;

    "Dear Mr Legendary Kelway,

I'm a sad, pathetic, immigrant orphan. I'm dying. I hoping you can help me with one last wish before I go...

Every day I see children starving, marginal groups oppressed, masses yearning to be free and honest families losing their homes, thrown on the street while huge corporations suck their livelihood from under them. I want do something to help.

While watching hours of teen Vampire drama's, I've thought long and hard about what I can do to play my part. And Its this...

Driving around in a shitbox Celica with a 4AGZE.

I know I cant expect you do it for free, I can help out by paying $17.80

    Best Regards,

    Pete

PS The the Doctor has given me 3 weeks, please hurry"

We'll how on earth could Rex refuse?

What follows is a diary of what Rex believes is the most basic and cheapest method of installing a 4AGZE into some jerks massive pile of junk TA22. Being a simple, basic conversion there will be none of the fabrication or awesome tweakage expected. "Just get it in and running..." Said young orphan Pete.

There'll hopefully be an update as each major system is finished. This is the first time He's done a 4AGZE conversion so you'll see the issues sorted as they arrive.

Eat shit and remember Celica's suck balls...

    One

First clean the enginebay and remove any of the useless garbage that wont be needed.

The motor is an ex-AW11 4AGZE. Supplied by Pete it was yanked from a crashed Spoonter already converted to RWD in one of the most hellishly dodgy conversions Rex's ever seen. It already had AE86 engine mounts, T50 gearbox and RWD flywheel and clutch assy.

Of course they don't bolt straight in, what sort of crack addled half-wit ever though it would?

The mounts were removed from the cross member. The motor and box were lowered and jimmied into a position that Rex was comfortable far back and the box fouls on the tunnel, too low and the sump and swaybar pose issues. the factory Celica mounts were then cut considerably and angled to meet the AE86 engine mounting rubbers. The passenger side bracket had to be trimmed as it is way too long. Then these were welded to the cross member and the shortened mount welded and gusseted.

Luckily on the underside as the 2TG uses a T50, the original gearbox cross member bolts up. This wasn't planned, just a fluke.

    Two

The water piping on the original motor was FWD. On this pre-converted motor it was a horrible mess indeed. This is the solution Rex came up with. The car doesn't have a heater so this was bypassed. With more time and a larger budget it could've been done neater but this is the most basic. There is square bugger all space to work in and the result seems reasonable.

The budget doesn't extend to new hoses, strange as it sounds. So all the hoses you see and matched and fitted from good spares/leftovers/second-handies.

Radiator supplied was ex-Camry, Rex believes. The bottom hose extends into the thermostat housing mounted in the forward drivers corner then backward and into a hoop that swings around the rear of the supercharger and into the water-pump. The idle-up water lines were left intact as Pete likely wouldn't accept the consequences of a low cold idle. Heater and bypass hoses were run into the thermostat housing.

These were all bracketed securely. With the supercharger re-installed the result seems neat and reliable.

    Dear Rex,

Good to see my $17.80 is being well spent, didn't we agree on $13.50. Don’t blow it all at once on Heineken, again. I prefer cc and dry personally.

No heater? Damn my arthritis isn't going to like the coldness of Coldelaide. This itself could finish me off.

Anyway I must comment on your decent fabrication ability and real personable nature. When I first saw your fanclub and worshipers on some Nissan forum I was suspicious and thought you might be all about massive dish and heaps of unnecessary lock. Not so I see.

Anyway, YES this car is built on an agreed budget that is going to produce something which will be reliable and well built but nothing fancy pants.

The plan is to get the car running with the 4AGZE with the T50 and extreme HD clutch that it came with. Mice decided to take over the shed it lived in so it smells real good.

The main purpose for this car is to be used a rally sprint and or track day fun car. There is no intent to use it as a daily driver. I know Rex is waiting for some competition also, he cant beat me at Gran Turismo (on aggregate) and he sucks as DOA though.

One thing at a time and once its running it will get some suspension, brake upgrades and importantly a cage. I have seen Rex do this so hopefully another carton of his beloved Heineken will make it so.

There is potential for W58, 4AGTE, Rack and pinion and so on down the track but this is not any time soon. Not winning the lotto last week has changed the budget significantly and the use of titanium and carbon fibre has been scaled down.

Good to see some pics of how it’s coming along. You should put up the thread of you KE70 that has been built for a similar purpose and this will show us some of your skillabilities.

Before He goes too far, let Rex begin by mentioning an awesome girl He was with a few nights ago. She was wild! She had so much backed-up sexual energy, the action totally wore Rex out for a few days even giving Him a bruised scrotum and pulverised pelvis. He asked her afterward why she went so wild?.

Turns out her last few boyfriends were Celica owners and she was just sick of the impotence and premature ejaculation problems that come with that...

    Anyhoo, on to the Tech;

Celica's suck arse so ofcourse the Corolla T50 shifter comes through the floor about 75mm further aft than the shit Celica. Rex trimmed the opening to open the hole as required. Then cut a plate to fill the remaining unused space. This was sealed down and the shifter boot fastened down over the new opening. Its a combination of Corolla rubber boot trimmed to suit the Celica.

Celica's suck arse and the intercooler supplied seems to be some form of original 4AGZE unit. Usually when front mounting the intercooler the pipes would be passed through the steel panel beside the radiator. This would allow the piping to be kept short, god knows 4AGZE's work best this way. Unfortunately the gigantic Camry radiator originally fitted to the shitbox covers all of this space. Likewise there is no space to fit two pipes (in and out) on the same side beneath any one headlight. The only option left is the traditional cross-flow setup in one side and out the other. To do this Rex had to replace the section smashed off the S/C outlet then on the intercooler, capped the original outlet and welded another on the otherside. These were welded so that they point in the right direction form the core.

Celica's suck arse so the cheapest and easiest method of doing the intercooler pipe is to use a length of straight tube and two donuts, then just piece and weld the whole lot together. The jointing rubber is industrial grade coolant hose. Rex prefers it because it is far superior to the fashion silicone you always see at the auto accessory stores. Sure, short pipework is the ideal but in this case it cannot be done. Oil cooler was mounted in the only other space it would fit neatly and avoid being damaged. Most modern cars have a lot of free space in the nose, Celica's suck arse and lack any of this space.

Well, Rex has a roll cage to do and a few manifolds have been ordered so this thing will be pushed out of the shed for a week or so.

Looking good, I think the radiator was a fwd corolla unit from memory.

Yeah the radiator doesn't seem ideal in this setup, it worked well when we put it in 10 years ago and it came with a thermo fan that cleared the 2TG that was in there. How much of a difference will these extended pipes make in affecting throttle response I wonder.

Has rex considered putting a flexible join in the long metal hose coming out of the back of the thermostat housing.

if left rigid, the end furtherest away from the motor might wave around a bit?

The thermostat housing is mounted securely to the chassis above the castor rod bracket. there is a six inch flexible rubber joint between this and the custom metal pipe connected to the back of the water pump. This metal pipe is braced to the engine near its furthermost tip.

Pub fact: The vast majority of history's most nasty bastards all drove Celica's. Goebbels filmed Goering sucking Hitler off in the crappy back-seat of an RA23. Pol-Pot used a TA22 to fetch Macca's and Chairman Mao spent a naughty weekend away in an RA60 with whoever the fuck created Twilight...

    Anyhoo...

After many months of sitting idle, this week it's been Rex's great misfortune to continue on the filthy stinking shitbox TA22 Celica.

So the new items to report are the following:

Celica's suck balls and being a former carb-fed arse with a future in gay porn and club scroter-sport its wise that it incorporates an anti-surge tank. This reason, and also that immigrant orphan Pete was adamant he wanted one probably because its shiny.

The two feed/return pipes were removed from the fore of the tank, shortened, flared and re-shaped to point towards the RHS as you'll see in the pics. The original electric diaphraghm lift pump for the twin carbs was maintained to fill the anti-surge tank with a new VL style external pump and filter to do the hard work. The feed and return hoses were feed through the boot-floor via a grommet and to meet with the lines under the car.

All hoses are protected from abrasion and sharp edges. This should not be considered a luxury, its a necessity.

Celica's suck balls. The inlet pipework supplied was maintained with the AFM bracketed securely. The cast inlet pipe on top of the throttle actually has an 8mm spacer. One downside is the the reversal of this pipe blocks a little air-port, we'll see if its important down the track. The only problem is that there is not a great deal of room left for a decent filter. That'll be sorted later...

Celica's suck balls so the clutch slave is on the LHS. Rex simply bade a new clutch line and bracket. so there...

More to come as it unfolds, still have to build some headers and a throttle cable/linkage setup. Celica's suck balls...

Peter is fit as an ox, luckily the doc was able to find some drugs to get him through the awesome celica build.

Rex is just being harsh cos he is a gen y ae86 drift kid guy and the celica is concourse classic.

Watch what you say there 'Pete', Rex foremost, is the guy spending every day doing your conversion for bugger all.

Well, Rex's nearing the maximum images uploaded so from now on they'll be direct links.

Anyhoo, it occurred to Him the other day that the word 'Celica' has the same number of letters as the word 'Wanker'. Now, Rex isn't calling all Celica owners wankers but you cant deny the coincidence, can you?

Celica's suck balls. The TRD copy headers supplied don't fit because the idler arm is in the way and without wanting to spend the time to find and try a stock manifold Rex knocked up these simple 4-1 headers. They are blended into whatever horrific shitbox exhaust was originally on the horrific shitbox car.

Note: These are NOT performance headers, they are just the simplest, cheapest set of custom tubular headers to fit in within the space.

    Tacked up:

Nice build and nice fab skills. Not to sure why you have to be such a wanker about it though. Other than the clearly insecure "celica suck balls" shit i thinks its awesome, a very informative helpful thread!
