    ca18de in a ke55 would be OK
should be good on fuel and provide a more up to date engine over the old 4K

if you're very short on money, unless you can do ALL this work yourself, i'm clean up the 4K and sell your CA18DE to help fund it.

engine conversions can be expensive and, especially when funds are low, take a VERY long time when done properly.

thanks mate, the 4k in it atm is pretty well useless.
i took it to a mechanic and he said you will need a fully re build on it.

i have about 1.5 - 2g's to get it started.

im going to pay some to mount the engine and gearbox but i have a friend that can help me with wiring and mounting the little extra bits.

to be fair i'd say most engine conversions when you have to pay someone else ; quickly add up to $5k min. again - depends on how much you can DIY.

its all the little things that add up, radiators, drive shafts, hose clamps, brake upgrades, diff upgrades, new timing belts water pumps, on and on and on...

whoa...a school holiday post with some intelligence! Kudos.

this will be a really nice, economical and reliable car to drive with this conversion. Is the donor car a manual?

The mounting of the engine won't be too hard, you'll need to place the engine in the car (cut the old mounts off the origonal Xmember first), get it sitting in the right place, then tac weld mounting plates onto the Xmember to suit the silvia mouts (you can cut off the silvia mounts and re-use them) Make sure you leave enough clearance for the radiator and exhaust etc, it shouldn't take more than a day or so once you've got the old motor out etc.

For the driveshaft, take the old shaft from the silvia, and the old shaft from the corolla (for the uni joint to suit the diff), measure the distance (with the car sitting on the GROUND, not in the air) and have them cut and joined by a driveshaft specialist, it will need to be very straight and balanced or you'll have vibration issues.

Radiator hoses: If your old radiator is in good condition, you can reuse it if you're on a budget, otherwise measure up CAREFULLY and get a new radiator from a wrecker, make sure the inlet/outlet are on the right side, and preferably the same diam as the outlet from the silvia. For the hoses, work out what you need, and go to your local car-bits supplier, and raid the bins until you find a hose with the right bends, you can cut and join them with a short peice of steel tube if need be. Make sure that the hoses are the right internal diam to suit the inlet/outlets. For the heater hoses, standard hose off a reel can be used, make sure there's enough that it can't kink.

Fuel system: You're going to have some hassles here, you'll need to fabricate an in-tank pump mounting and make sure that the pickup is close to the base of the tank, as well as purchasing a pump. You can use the existing steel lines, but make sure they're in good condition, because they will now be under 50+psi of pressure. Ideally purchase a pipe flaring tool and some new copper pipe and make new ones. Throw away ALL the rubber fuel hose from the corolla, it won't handle the pressure. Use new, EFI hose for everything (this is something you don't want to skimp on, the fuel system) and for the in-tank hose, ensure that it is fuel-rated inside AND outside (sounds silly, but I had some hose disintegrate in the tank of my car, the outer sheath of the hose was not fuel resistant, and the car stopped). Make sure that you run a return line as well.

Exhaust: This is pretty straight forward, you don't need a Cat because of the age of the car.

Intake: Same as above, make sure you've got a decent filter.

Wiring: You're on your own here, but there's plenty of info out there if you get stuck. Remember that you'll have to run power for the ECU and probably a few other feeds.

Diff: I don't know if you can get a bigger, LSD for your car, but being that it's similar to a sprinter, you probably can. You won't need this straight away, but you'll love it when you've got it.

Suspention: DON'T SKIMP HERE! It's keeping you alive. King springs and new shocks are a bare minimum, and check all the bushings for slop and wear.

Brakes: See above. There might be an easy drop-in from elsewhere in the toyota stable.

Enjoy! And good work! Nice to see the resto job.

The one thing i don't see mentioned above - ke55's are cable clutched aren't they? I assume the CA18DE will be hydraulic like my CA18DET, so you will need to do a hydraulic clutch conversion as well.

I don't know how similar the floorpan and swaybar setup of a ke55 is to ke20, but in mine, to avoid a custom swaybar and get the engine back as far as possible, this pushed my shifter back into the area where the crossmember runs across the floor. Just make sure when you mount the engine, it is done keeping in mind where the gearbox is, for this reason.. The CA18 shifters are quite far back

No problems mate, but it's only the basics. Like Bananaman brought up, there'll be plenty of smaller issues which will need rectifying. You'll have to decide which is going to be harder: getting the shifter in the right place, or getting a custom swaybar made up. Do a careful measure up, but also keep in mind that ideally the engine will be as far back as practical anyway to balance the weight distribution.

yeah!, but do i need hydraulic clutch conversion with a auto gearbox?
im trying to prepare myself for the anoying glitchs and walls that im going to run into.

btw do i need a custom sump tank?

yeah in my ke55 it will be auto gearbox with b&m quick shift.

thanks soo much again guys!! Dylan

No, you won't need a clutch at all That said, i STRONGLY recommend a manual gearbox. The sump shouldn't be a problem, you'll have to see if it interferes with the front Xmember...

i would highly prefer a manual, but cuz overall im doing this car be myself i dont have to money or the brains to go buy a manual gearbox and ECU if i cant run the manual off the auto one.
once i get this engine and gearbox in when i upgrade to the ca18det engine i will be using same mounts so what ever gearbox i use now will stay in for while.

there is a datsun 120y i have seen on youtube im hoping to get my car something like that power wise.

may i ask y you think go with a manual? funner to drive??

thanks heeeeps Dylan btw i apreciate this alot!

As far as i'm aware the auto ECU is fine, i was intending on using one on mine. Probably just needs something bridged to fool it into thinking it is in neutral all the time so that it will start.

As a general rule, auto 4 cyl's are usually pretty ordinary, hard to keep in the powerband, drones, hunts gears up hills, etc. Would be much more enjoyable to drive as a manual, and arguably better on fuel as well.

Assuming the ke55 crossmember is the same style as ke20 the sump fouling it won't be a problem.

yeah thanks for that, how much could i sell the auto gearbox for and get a manual one for?
if there isnt much differance i will look into it much much more.
and is there much extra stuffing around to get the manual g'box and clutch to work?

btw look at the pic of your ke20 very very nice work, lovin your car got me jealous = )

thanks heeeeps happy i got ppl that are switched on and give out info that make sence!!!!!
