View Full Version : 8 day challenge- MX73 to JZX73 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
BigWorm

The mission, which I have chosen to accept: combine this (1J powahz)
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6690/img06999hd.jpg
with this (5M-GE powahz)
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8369/dsc009985fh.jpg
and have it up & running, with enough time to drive it from SA to Sydney in time for dyno day (yes, this upcoming dyno day!).
Parts to be fitted are:
engine- 1JZ-GTE,
transmission,
intercooler + associated pipe work,
wiring,
dash (tacho etc),
ECU,
tailshaft,
diff (LSD),
exhaust,
crossmember & steering rack (modded & reconditioned),
suspension F&R,
stereo (non essential, but would be nice),
fuel pump,
and perform the R33 caliper/BA falcon disc brake upgrade.
The white one I drove into the garage on sunday, about 11:30am, and as of 5pm yesterday is sitting out the front pretty much a shell with some interior. Unfortunately I didn't have access to a dgital camera, so I have no progress pics, but I will get a pic up of the empty shell later this week.
The grey one, which I purchased on a flying trip to Sydney last week along with the mags, and is arriving by truck this morning, will do the duties of getting me too & from work thur & fri day, sat & sun night, and serious work will begin sometime on monday, with the aid of a good friend flying over from Sydney.
I figure I can swap over the suspension, LSD, stereo and do the brakes (depending on when the calipers arrive, should be late this week) before monday, which will make things a bit easier for us.
So that will leave is monday arvo, tues, wed, thur & some of fri to remove the 5M-GE & install the 1J, intercooler & make heads or tails of the wiring, then leave fri night/early sat morning to drive to Sydney (ok, I'm also trying to make it to a party in Sydney on sat night  ), and with any luck turn up at sometime on Dyno Day! Then almost more importantly, attend the WSID wednesday night drags the following week!
So what do you think, doable? Or am I dreaming?

do-able - 3 days of mechanical work, 1 day at the suspension shop, the other 4 to work out why the fuck the electrics aren't working. No sleep allowed.
end result will be a going car with a rats nest of wiring (aka Norbie's white nitemare) in the front passenger foot well... ;)

Nah, you should be pretty fine. If you are worried about the wiring just transplant the main dash section over from the poo white one.

Hehe, at least you dont have to worry too much about the paint now, the new one at least looks half decent.

20-06-2006, 11:10 AM
Ahhh, I didn't realise the white one you were wrecking was THAT one, haha.
Yeah man, easy as, if you just straight swap.
But if you decide to clean the motor/gbox, paint the bay, make it all look new, then you may be pushing it.

I'm with the others!
I can't see any dramas at all!
Go nuts :)
Cheers

Yeah, nothing like a deadline to get you productive! And you've got help flying in, and you've posted your intentions here for all to see and remind you of, so you're feeling pretty confident too.
When you've got a spare moment, sit down and elaborate on that brief summary above so you've got a detailed checklist of what needs to be done and by when. That way you've got a timeline to adhere to each day/morning/evening to make it easier to stay on track.
You can do eet!!

what happened to your white one.
its not repairable with a guard and bonnet and bumper.
its a much tidier car than the grey one, its looks crappy in comparison.

20-06-2006, 03:36 PM
and why wasn't my car finished in 8 days? :(
I think it is doable though.

20-06-2006, 08:02 PM
Is Stitt going over to help????
Yeah Its doable My brother an I did a MA70 to JZA70 conversion in the equivalent to 7 days. and we did spend a fair deal of time drinking piss on the job in the evenings.
BigWorm
20-06-2006, 08:27 PM
Nah it's not Stitt coming over, another mate who hasn't quite got around to registering on the "new" forums (pffft, they were new like 6 months ago!!!).
I'm gonna chuck in the suspension & diff tomorrow, plus continue stripping the white one. I need to suss out what makes the headlights turn off when you open the drivers door, as the new older one doesn't have that, so I guess I'll have to rip out a bit more stuff than I planned. I just hope the electricals between '85-'86 and '87-'88 isn't too different.....
The grey one is actually in much better condition than the white one, the white ones paint was completely shit, there was a couple of good size dings in it & the front passenger door was peeling, this grey one looks tops compared to the white one. Plus it has a (rustless) sunroof!
And damn standard Cressidas are good cars to drive!
I hope you can manage to get it up and running, at least for WSID so we can catch up. You should be use to working under pressure, you dont want to cause a delay now do you? ;)

Good luck mate
this model of the cresida has a bit of sentimental value to me.. was hoping i could get the one my grand-dad used to own and chuck a 1JZ in it.. (inspired from toymods :) )
a write up or day by day progress, when u get started if you please kind sir ....

joel. sleep is overrated
seriously if you have the time to commit to that and only that and it runs in old whitey you should be on a winner in the grey one.
good luck man.

Ok, today I finished stripping the white one, all that's left is the seats, carpet & roof lining, everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING, is in the backyard or shed (apart from the busted bits, they're in the boot).
Only thing I managed to get done today was install the front shocks & springs (Koni reds & dobsons), tomorrow night after work I'll get stuck into the rear shocks & springs (KYBs & dobsons) & maybe chuck in the stereo.
Tomorrow & Fri I'm working 7am till 7pm, so they don't really count as part of the 8 days, then I'm working 7pm till 7am sat & sun night, so I should be able to get a few things done during the day & head off to work for some rest. ;)
I picked up some BA Falcon discs yesterday, I need to get the hubs machined down a bit to suit them, & the R33 calipers should be arriving tomorrow, so if I can get those on & the 5M-GE out by Monday I'll be feeling a bit more confident.
Pics will follow once I'm home during daylight.
Sounds awesome dude!
Let me know if you need an extra hand for next monday or tuesday, I won't know much but am happy to help out and learn.

Has anyone successfully done the BA upgrade on an MX73 strut/hub ?
BigWorm
21-06-2006, 11:32 PM
Not that I know of, but then again I don't know of anyone who has tried unsuccessfully. The only difference I see between using the BA rotor & a skyline rotor is the extra 9 or 10mm hat height, which saves using the caliper spacer & provides a bit more wheel clearance.
Can you see any problems I may encounter?

Ace, give us a call or just drop round if you're keen mate, I'll be around all day & into the night mon & tues (and the rest of the week for that matter). An extra pair of hands won't go astray, even if they just provide an endless supply of liquid gold nourishment! ;)

make sure you bring Bec. ;)
lol, no worries
+ve for you :)
Joel, I'm still going to suggest the same thing - swap all the looms :p
I can't remember 100% but I'm pretty sure I added (or maybe changed) pins on the large yellow plug to the engine loom, a cable from the fuse box along one air con line, and the cabling to the cluster.
If you just try to plug the engine loom into the unmodified 5M-GE plug you could have problems... you might be ok, but no guarrantees :p
Mos.
BigWorm
22-06-2006, 07:07 AM
Yeah Mos, I'm slowly coming to terms with swapping the whole loom, although I still don't want to!
I found some of your handywork when stripping the white one (the cluster cable), but I didn't notice the one from the fuse box....

Yeah yeah, there's no better way to bring the SA Toymods community together than with a rushed engine conversion! :D
Got my hubs machined today, but my brother cannot find the spare set of hub to disc spacers he had machined up! And just for reference, MX73 & MX83 have the same diameter hub extension bits (so BA disc spacers for an 83 will fit a 73- tops!).
CrUZida
22-06-2006, 08:48 PM
You mean the hub centric size? yes its both 60mm.

BigWorm
22-06-2006, 09:52 PM
You are GOLD!!! Jesse will be having a look around for his spare pair tomorrow, but if they don't turn up I will certainly be in touch!
Now these calipers better turn up tomorrow.....
BigWorm
24-06-2006, 02:43 AM
OK, as of tonight the LSD is now installed along with the rear springs, shocks & swaybar. o that just leaves the engine, tranny, wiring & ECU & stereo, and the intercooler & tranny cooler.
Tomorrow I'm going to go and fetch myself an RA65 power steering line, as the Enzed P/S line I removed seems to have been rubbing on something (maybe a pulley  ) and was always a little too long anyway.
While it's all underway I'm also planning on welding up a battery tray/holder out of a bit of angle iron, seeing as I have a borrowed welder sitting in the shed. The old batt. tray was a bodgy riveted together aluminium job that was always a bit wobbly.
So tomorrow is gathering required bits-n-pieces day, then Sunday is when I'm planning on getting the old-engine-removal-phase underway.
Oh, & my R33 calipers didn't turn up today , if they're not here early next week I will be pissed!!! (and will go without the brake upgrade, temporarily)

How's your Cressida search coming along? You know MX73s can be had for less money, weigh a few hundred kilos less, & look a whole lot more stylin'! Plus 1J engine mounts to suit can be bought ready made.

Talk to ya later, Ace
takai
24-06-2006, 07:11 PM
ace: where and what brand for the 14" thermofan, im after a couple for my cressy soon. But after something like the Davies Craig fans with boltholes parallel to the fan, rather than some of the other weird ones ive seen.
Its a 'Calibre' 14 incher, we have the Calibre range and some of the Davies Craig range (Joel and i could only see up to 10" today). We've got their catalogue at Super Cheap Auto (Thebarton, Port Road) so i spose we can order any of their range in.
I bought the fan which 'll give to Joel so he could get my discount (25% off) and i'm happy to do it again for a Toymodder as long as i don't get in trouble....
Are you gonna be helping out Joel at any stage? If so you can suss the Calibre one...
Ace
takai
25-06-2006, 12:54 AM
Yeah, the Calibre ones have a weird mounting system. Its almost like they are held in from the sides on a special latch arrangement. I was going to get soem DC ones, but the SCA out on Bridge Rd didnt have any of the 12"s. Im probably going to run dual 12" fans.

27-06-2006, 11:47 PM
Real quick update: 5Mge is out, crossmember & rack is out, new crossmember & rack is in, complete dash is out, old dash loom is out, new dash loom is in, dash is back together, R33 calipers & BA discs are on, along with new braided brake lines & longer studs, fuel pump is in..... passenger door loom is being swapped (different plugs), 1JZ goes in tomorrow.
Found the plug yet? :)
Mos.
BigWorm
28-06-2006, 03:18 AM
Um, no, not yet..... :o
The search for the plug will continue, as will the search for pictures of the white engine bay, pre & post 1J removal. If the "missing plug" is the only problem we have to sort out, I reckon I'll be happy.
I don't suppose you'd fancy an overnight trip to Adelaide?
Some of the problems we have encountered are:
* above mentioned "missing plug", due to my carelessness- difficulty rating 5- priority rating high- problem pending
* the new earlier model Cressida has indicators in the guards, the loom we swapped over doesn't- difficulty rating 3- priority rating low- problem pending
* the front passenger door loom plug doesn't match the plug on the swapped loom- difficulty rating 3- priority rating medium- problem solved pending testing (door loom swapped)
That's the only decent problems so far, I'm sure more will crop up once the motor is in & electrical power is applied, which will hopefully be tomorrow.
Tomorrows agenda includes motor & transmission installation, radiator support modification to suit intercooler piping, intercooler installation, trans cooler & power steering lines, radiator & thermo fans installation, battery tray fabrication, then at some stage testing will commence.
Wish me luck.
EDIT: progress pics should be up soon.

29-06-2006, 12:41 AM
Goddamn she runs!!!!! :D:D:D
Mos, I shoved those 3 wires in the 3 wire plug that had the same clour wires & that seemed to do the trick! Now I just have to get the other side of the plug from the 5M & wire it up properly & she should be good.
It still needs fluids, headlights, a new 90 degree tyre valve (straight one hits the calipers), a battery tray, one of the fan wires swapped around, and a general tidy up, then I can give her a test drive. That gives me tomorrow & maybe half of friday to troubleshoot & prepare for the drive to Sydney.

Thanks fellas!
I'm stoked, seeing as we only dropped the motor in this morning, and wasted a bit of time mounting fans & installing then uninstalling & then reinstalling a fuel filter (dodgy valvoline filter  ), plus flushing & bleeding the brakes.
I'll try to get Jesse to put some pics up for me tomorrow.
Hell yeah nice work dude!!! What was with all the door wiring? What needed to be done?
Hahahaha what was wrong with the Valvaline fuel filter? Are you regretting that you didn't go genuine now?
BigWorm
29-06-2006, 01:23 AM
For some reason the grey cressidas passenger door loom had a different plug to the white cressidas dash loom, so it wouldn't plug in, even though the drivers side pluged straight in no worries. So we simply swapped the door loom from the white cressida & with the very brief testing performed tonight it seemed to worked ok.
The bloody fuel filter! For some reason the bottom fitting uses a bigger banjo bolt, which we realised once the filter was fitted to the engine & the engine installed. So we took the original one to toyota & while very helpful, quoted a replacement one at $160. So I came back home & just chucked the old one back in.
I'll look into replacing once I have a bit more time, but for now it'll do the job.
but for now it'll do the job.
Exactly man.....Thats the whole point of the 8 day challenge!

30-06-2006, 01:25 AM
Hey, thanks for volunteering Matt, if anything goes wrong I'll be sure to call you first! :p
But yeah, took her for a drive tonight, & she seems all good! :D :D :D
The only major issue at the moment is a bettery tray, but the very helpful Rex Kelway will be having a look at that tomorrow & will try to knock something up for it. ATM it's held in with a couple of the biggest cable ties you're likely to see!
Apart from that it needs 1 wire hooked up for the stereo, the r/h parker & the gear shifter light isn't working, and the window switches have decided to get a bit dicky.
Taking it for a drive was quite funny, first I drove it round the block with the bonnet off & there was no problems, so we chucked the bonnet on & closed it before we realised the bonnet release cable wasn't hooked up! Once we had the grille removed it wasn't too hard to open though, fortunately.
Then we started driving it down the road & all of a sudden it started missing & stuttering, & the engine light was coming on, so I pulled over to investigate & my bodgy 15 cent home made fuel cut defender was shorting out on a bracket that one of my "helpers" had shoved it in! Once that was fixed though it was smooth running for a good hours drive. The brakes seem as though they could do with another quick bleed along with the cooling system, but that shouldn't take long.
The plan is we leave here asap tomorrow (after some battery bracketry is made & a quick tidy up performed) and arrive in Sydney some time on Saturday.
Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Well what do you know, here I am in Sydney, and I even brought the Adelaide weather with me! :p
After leaving at 4pm yesterday myslef & my mate Karl (who came up to help with the conversion- respect!) arrived in Sydney at 6am this morning Adelaide time.
The trip was fairly uneventful, luckily, the only problem to arrise was a slightly undertightened & leaking heater hose clamp, so a quick stop in some backwater hicktown soon had that repaired, with no other problems at all. :D
The car drove beautifully, & made overtaking an absolute breeze, it just ate up the kilometers.
Big thanks goes to everyone who helped out, Karl from Sydney for flying up & putting in the long hours, Andrew from my work, who also put in the long hours, Takai for a pair of last minute disc-to-hub spacers and big thanks to Rex Kelway, who was up at 7am yesterday to weld up a battery tray for me.
Oh, & Jesse/PlacentaJuan, for putting up with crap everywhere & taking care of the clean up in preperation for next weeks property inspection.
Hopefully he'll put some pics up soon like I asked him too aswell.

What size wheels do you have there? 17s? Cuss i'm loving how the R33 gear fills them out.

same question as ace..
if you are using the same box, what about the ecu and wiring up of the box i.e. O/D button and ECT switch.. does it work?
if using different box, does the O/D and ECT function work still?
BigWorm
07-07-2006, 12:49 PM
Sweet, thanks for the pics Jesse!
Also I forgot to add Gerald1 and Ace to the thankyou list, Gez for helping remove the bonnet & pulling off a few other random bits & Ace for helping with the supply of thermo fan & fuel filter & aiding in the removal of the 5M.
The wheels are only 16" so the brakes really do fill them out well, the disc diameter is 298mm (approx 12"). They look sweet hey!
Ace, that piping you're looking at is the intercooler piping, it's got a bit of cloth taped over the end that connects up to the cooler.
And the transmission used was the original 1JZ tranny out of the white one. Yes the O/D & ECT buttons do work, but I don't know how or why, all the wiring was left up to Mos when the original conversion was under taken, & for this one we just swapped everything over.
Ooh also, she made 194rwkW at dyno day (a little less than I was expecting, but still pleasing) and pulled a 13.210 @ 105MPH at the drags on wednesday night, which I am quite happy with.
Once I pedal the old girl home I'll really be able to say Mission Accomplished.
Nice work dude.....
Also we got more of those mechanics gloves in at supercheap, let me know if you want some put aside.
