Well, here I am with another progress report, still working on fitting up the Mk3 Front and Rear, this is a leadon from an earlier post "RA23 vs 2JZ-GTE" found at http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5785 . I've got the IRS subframe dummy fitted and initial pics to highlight the issues I've so far come across. Interesting though is much of where old and new meet is surprisingly compatible, especially the simple things like intended mount points (rear goes straight through the Chassis Rails, the front looks to be even moreso accurate to the rails) and the RA23 handbrake cable looks to be nearly identical to the Mk3 puller. I've already chucked the old engine and diff, W50 gearbox and RA23 front end is about to help compact the garbage in my wheelie bin. On getting these two subframes fitted, I get to call my engineer to come sign off on it.

I have a bunch of questions to put forward but right now, I don't have the time to be that organised... I guess I'll post a more coherent list when I get my thoughts together...

So when I finally bolt in the 2JZ-GTE and V161, do I get to call this contraption a JZA23...? :D

I was actually thinking about a very similiar idea the other day with the A70 subframe - keep up the pics, I'm fascinated to see how this goes!

Brilliant effort, it's great to see someone who just jumps in and tries it. So you're planning on getting this thing legal, licensed, and on the road? Good stuff. I'll keep watching, impressed.

So is this mod legal in the ACT?

the ACT can do whatever they want!!! It's SOOOOOOOOO not fair!!
(of course getting it engineered could be hard, if you didnt know the right engineer)

That, my friend is a tops effort! That'll look mean with some serious flares. In about a year, I shall be doing the IRS conversion with an S13 rear end (or maybe FD RX7).

JZA23, eh? I think in almost every respect, this will be a JZA70 on a diet! There won't be much 23 left... Any ideas what engineer you'll be using? And this beast in Canberra? I look forward to seeing it in the flesh, probably ridiculously sideways, scaring the crap out of some domestic V8!!

Hey Bugeyed!

Good luck mate, it's a big job! Can't wait to see the progress!

Any chance you had all ur old running gear on allclassifieds a few weeks ago? If it was... it was a bargain to whoever got it!

Yep,

That was me... Wanted to throw it up here but this site has different priorities these days & I was just happy to see it go.

You're right, it was a bargain... :D

John Wilson is my engineer in the ACT, This is my wife's car but where someone says we have all the advantages, luck, etc. because we live here, I'd beg to differ. My project car up in Townsville is a very similar beast tho it's a Cortina wearing the same Mk3 Supra suspension but like this Celica has also received preliminary go ahead by that state's certified automotive engineer to do it.

I Want!

...don't suppose you could help with fibreglass front quaters, bonnet and chin spoiler too...?

hmmm... I'm not sure if Phil is making *A23 chin spoilers or just TA22 ones. However, a mate in Belgium is making reproduction flares, ducktail rear spoilers and front spoilers for TA22s. Which if Phil reads this thread, I need to send you an email regarding these items :)

Anyway, he is moulding these from genuine Toyota items he purchased on Yahoo Japan, so I suspect the ducktail will have Toyota imprinted on it, although not entirely sure of this. However if it is the case it makes it a lot more desirable.

Depending on how big your budget is, carbon fibre panels are made in Japan for early Celicas. As far as I know, my mate doesn't make panels and bonnets, just the race car lookalike parts.

also try this guy

but see Phil Eacott first as he will be able to source most fibreglass stuff

Cheers

:D

Funny you should ask... getting heap of pics as I go, just trying to finish the mounted items in their entirety before I start "Part 3". The front end is all but mounted, the rear is mostly cut in and I'm in the throes of working out how the hell I'm gonna get coilovers into a reduced Celica rump... the Mk3 has a tall strut dammit... :( I've got photos of the overhanging wheels front and rear along with pics of the modified front and rear subframes to fit.

On another note, I checked out my Cortina up in Townsville this week, the Supra frontcut is in and it looks Sooo SCHWEEEEET :P I'm thinking the next Celica I'll do will probably just have the same thing done to it... has heaps of space to wedge all sorts of things into it and none of this having to cut up the subframe either. It still hangs all the original panels and valance for that outwardly factory appearance, how can I go wrong???

Damn, this is looking good. For your fibreglass panels, try finding Nick Streeter. Search the Classic Celica Dedicated Thread (under general car talk) and you will find his contact details. Phill Eacott is doing RA23 chin spoilers as I have already asked him about them.

Keep up the good work on the JZA23, and let us know how the corty goes too. Be interested in seeing it on the streets. If your ever going to do a run through Mackay, let me know so I can have a perv.

Cheers, Owen

PS, who is your engineer in Townsville??

Hey, Thanks heaps for the pointer on the flares, etc... I've been chasing this up recently :D Dave Price is my engineer in Townsville, 07 4779 7878. He did a few things for me, most notably, the last Cortina I built with an XR6 engine. He did a great job then and he's got my Lime Green Cortina XR6T project in there now (it'll be Cardinal Red before it gets registered...) if you ever get a chance to go past, looks bizzare to see the Supra engine bay in a Cortina...

Anyway, where was I.... Oh Yeah! I may be building my own flares, I'm pretty sure not a lot of makers of flares would've made them as wide as I need them, I know there's ways around it but I am prudely fussy about the look of such things and how it fits into the whole package. I'm a big fan of the natural lines of classics in general and it annoys me I have to flare it in the first place. I'm very big on function over form, it shits me to tears when I see any car wanked right up on oversized impractical bodykits, reflectors & sundry "Huge Horsepower Inside" badges while sporting those fashionable standard rims and a bog stock underpowered factory engine...

I'm about to start a new thread to record more updates on this RA23 (including a concept photoshop mockup), front and rear of the Celica is mostly cut in, will be sharing my ideas on final mounting and will ask some Q's on best ways to accomplish some stuff... best I do this while I have the time over the next coupla days... :)

Thanks Guys!

Ill be dealing with Lindsay Stone for my conversion, as he travels to Mackay reasonably regularly and I know a few people who have dealt with him and are very happy with his work/rates.

You seem to be dropping a fair wad of cash into projects, dont want to sponsor another RA23?? haha. Ill try and have a squiz at the cortina next time im up at brownsville, but with buying a house, I dont think Ill be travelling too often.

NO NO you can't. everyone thinks that, You do know NSW rego is looser than ACT rego?

I wasn't even allowed to get a bolt in 1jzgte registered in a MA70....
