View Full Version : 1JZ Turbo Upgrade

about a month ago when i received the letter for rego renewal, i thought to myself that i would let it expire and take the JZA70 off the road for a while. this would give me a chance to tidy up the car and sort out a few teething issues.
that was the plan until my brother walked in the door oneday holding a brand new turbo that was given to him for free for his drift car. he explained he could get me a similar but larger turbo at a good price through his sponsor so i thought "why the hell not". so my rego actually expired yesterday (monday) the car will stay off the road until the little project is complete.
what am i using?
criticise me if you will, but im doing this on the cheaper side of things. the turbo is internally gated and from Hypergear (probably havent heard of that) - it is pretty much identical to a turbo from KKR (which are a little more well known). yes, these are chinese items...
im unsure of exact specs but it seems to be of similar size to a GT30. it is rated at 500hp, but i will be happy with anything around the 250 rwkw mark (335rwhp)
the manifold is a stainless steel item from ebay (which i bought through these forums) and it arrived just today. so at the moment i just have the turbo and the manifold.

bonnet of WOOHOOO
intercooler: ill most definately be going with one of the Just Jap Hybrid style coolers (keep that chinese theme moving along :P) with some custom made pipe work in painted mild steel.
engine management: either an SAFC or SAFC2 since they seem to be pretty good bang for buck with a decent tune
fuel supply: 440cc 2JZ injectors seem to be the go. used ones go for around the $200 mark which is quite reasonable. i have also read about those 255L/hr Walbro fuel pumps on toymods so ill probably get one of those as well. obviously the car will need a tune soon after the turbo is fitted, but im still tossing up whether or not the stock fuel system will be up to scratch for what i want. ill probably "bite the bullet" and upgrade it before the tune so i dont have to stuff around with retuning later on.
clutch: most probably something like an extreme 5 puck clutch with a heavy duty pressure plate. these seem to be the go for most street cars these days and again, arent to bad price wise. i need to look further into this when the time comes though :)
at the moment, my present goal is to finish removing the stock twins (which is proving to be difficult but i am chipping away), so i can tidy up a few things before beginning the instal. i will be doing as many things as possible myself (to keep costs down) but rest assured, the car will not be back on the road until things are completed PROPERLY.
At first I was going to neg rep you for drinking Coke Zero, but I though the fact that you have a JZA70 and are modding it makes up for it :P Best of luck with your mods. May I ask how much you paid for the turbo, and how much it would be usually?

cheers mate ;)
haha dont worry im no fan of coke zero, its all i could find to do a size comparison at the time the pic was taken :p
i ended up getting the turbo for 400 dollars but they retail for 690. i have to put a sticker on my windscreen but im more than happy to do so (it was a special deal through my brother because the same supplier donated one to him for his drift car as a sponsor) :).

It will be interesting to see how these KKR/Hypergear turbos go in a performance application. I think they are using them on LSI Kits (GenT) so they must be pretty well made.
It's a pity the chinese produced those rubbish turbos earlier on. I think they can produce any product to any std if the customer wants it. This will be a good test.

yeah i am sharing just as much interest as you mate :) im kind of not sure what to expect at the moment, but hopefully it will hold up alright. rest assured ill keep this thread well updated.

well, i've finnaly made some inroads into the upgrade. the stock turbos are now completely removed. what a fucker of a job! wouldnt have been able to do it without the help of a gas blow torch and the guidance of my dad (whose prtty experienced mechanically). the heat on the manifold bolts definately made them easier to crack.
while i was at it i was able to do a quick test fit of the manifold. looks like the existing strut brace will clear the turbo which is convinient :)

next on the adgenda is to thoroughly degrease the hot side of the motor (as it is absolutely filthy) and have everything looking top notch before i begin fitting the manifold, turbo, oil lines etc.
spiller
23-08-2006, 05:33 PM
today i finally got around to degreasing the hot side of the motor. first up i used some heavy duty degreaser and a high pressure cleaner, followed by canned degreaser and a toothbrush. im fairly happy with the results.
BEFORE

there is still grease on the block, but that can stay there as the turbo and manifold will cover that up. my main goal was to clean the head up a bit, and i think ive achieved this somewhat. im about to order some rocker cover gaskets from toyota at $37 each () so this doesnt happen again!

cheers man, well ive been pretty lazy with updating it on this forum as im more frequent over on the aus supra forums, but the progress is coming to a rapid close. car goes in to have the cooler mounted and all plumbing made up tomorrow along with the dump pipe and modifications to the wastegate pipe on the manifold.
i think less than 2 weeks, it should be running :)

Even its a braided line??

yeah this is just a test fit, im most probably going to get some protective heat wrapping to go around the hose where it comes into contact with the manifold.

car is off to the fab workshop for cooler piping, dump pipe and manifold modification this weekend...cant wait for the first test drive myself...
also that turbo offer is not available to anyone else...
so please dont PM me asking for it :)
they are still pretty awesome value even at full retail :)

+1 rep, Great thread, great work.
She is definatly looking good. Looks like there isnt going to be much clearance turbo to hood. any idea how it is? I am hoping to do the same in the not too distant future too and have been looking at the same manifold on ebay.

im expecting the car back in my driveway any time soon now so when it is ill post up some new pics. once i have it back i just need to fit an oil return line, check over a few little things and do a quick service then it should be time to start it up!

thanks mate :)
the clearance turbo to hood is actually really good with this manifold. i run a strut tower brace as well and the turbo sits a good 30mm below that. so thats certainly not an issue. although i should note that i rotated the outlet of the turbo around so its facing downwards rather than facing the rocker cover like it is in those pictures.

Any other cheap T3 1jz manifolds people know of?
Can you give some details on the specifics of the oil feed and return.
what flanges do they use? what fittings? any oil restrictor? if so, what size?
Thanks :)

cheers mate.
my manifold is a little different to that one. it doesnt have those little tabs on the runners and the wastegate pipe is on a slightly different angle. i bought it new off a guy on supraforums but it originally came from ebay and from what i've seen it looks like a MONSTA performance product. not sure how its going to hold up, i would have liked a little bit of bracing but the turbo im using isnt exactly HUGE so im hoping it doesnt crack or sag.
for the oil feed i used a braded hose with banjo and speedflow fittings on each end (one banjo on the turbo and one banjo on the engine block). the oil return line im still sorting but at the moment i have sourced a retun piece from a Nissan VG30 turbo (because it bolts right up to my turbo) - this piece has a 19mm ID, however the return piece on the engine is an odd size (~21mm ID) so it has made finding an oil hose difficult as most places dont stock that size. yesterday i went out and grabbed some oil hose thats rated to 100 degrees celsius but the ID is 19mm. its going to be difficult to stretch over the top of that 21mm fitting on the block but with a bit of lubricant hopefully it all goes to plan - thats for tonight.
here's a pic of the bits and pieces for the oil feed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/spiller/testfit002.jpg
the dump pipe is being made tonight along with an oil/coolant change and then its time to start it hopefully.

Wonder how much different it would be for the Soarer. Prob not much Id imagine. But I have heard that the manifolds are different, or was that between JZA80 and Jzz30?
beasht
16-11-2006, 11:22 AM
Shouldn't be any different aslong as your soarer has the 1JZ twin turbo and not the non turbo 2JZ or 1JZ single vvti turbo engine.
Only thing i could see being different is maybe clearance of the wastegate pipe on the manifold? I'll let spiller confirm that :P

Any reason you didn't use a 90deg fitting on the turbo inlet instead of a banjo?
Thanks for the info.
I had the same problem getting my oil return line. I think I might get it modded a bit smaller.

cheers mate, im assuming you are a member on supraforums...do you have a different user name over there?
and as beasht said, the manifolds for the JZZ30 and JZA70 are interchangable and he was quite correct in saying that wastegate clearance is a potential issue. the manifold im suing is actually desgined for a Z30 but ive JUST managed to squeeze the wastegate in there...all be it its a small 38mm gate.
Any reason you didn't use a 90deg fitting on the turbo inlet instead of a banjo?
no particular reason, the guy who sourced them for me said the 90 degree fittings were far more expensive and i didnt think much of it at the time. there is no doubt that the 90 degree fittings are better - these banjos are a bit tricky to get right but im sure we'll have some fun with them tonight when we fill it with oil

well i finally brought the car home yesterday and might i say at the end of this weekend, im absolutely spent. all day yesterday was devoted to getting the car looking ok for the car event today - i didnt consume a sinlge bit of food for 24 hours.
so its all up and running and might i say i am in love...
there are some minor things to tidy up but they will be taken care of over the next couple of weeks. i can report that it seems to be running quite well without a tune thus far. not sure how much boost is being put through the system but its somewhere between 10 and 14 pund (my guess) because its not hitting fuel cut, and it goes a little too hard to be only running 7 pound.
turbo is a little laggier than i expected - the gate opens up at about 4300 (and the screamer is VERY loud), but when its on boost its a great amount of fun - more or less, im not fussed by the turbo lag, its to be expected with a big turbo upgrade :)
couldnt be happier at the moment.

cheers for the comments everyone ;)
Chris, im not 100% sure what was causing the oil leak (because i wasnt down at the shop at the time) but i think it was because we hadnt tightened up the speedflow fittings on the ends of the braid, so once that was done it was all good.
as for that oil return piece, what size is it? i used a 19mm off a nissan turbo - anyway, that loo0ks like the flange will mate up with the TR44 but you might have to modify the angle of the fittng so it doesnt hit the manifold you are using. mone was a VERY tight squeeze thats for sure.
chris davey
20-11-2006, 04:49 PM
Hmm, I think the easiest way for me will be to see if I can use the current flange and modify it to the TR44 if need be as I know that it fits my current braided return line.
I don't think I will have clearance issues with the return as my manifold is a bit different to yours plus I will have about an extra 2" height wise from the t3-t4 adaptor. Turbo sticking out the bonnet :D
Did you use the front or rear oil feed?
What size cooler pipes are they? I was told the TR44 has a 2" compressor outlet. I currently have a 3" outlet and 3" piping all the way.

i used to rear oil feed...
yeah the TR44 has a 2inch compressor outlet so that cooler pipe is 2 inch then becomes 2.5inch about half way between the cooler inlet and the turbo outlet.
